access to accessory belts - anti-gravity panel
OK I can not get past square one with my first fix-it project on this 928 I just brought home. Yes it runs good and looks good, but the acc. belts are well past their prime. I have changed a number of belts in my time … how tough can it be? I figured I would work from the underside. I pulled 6 fasteners from the underside of the front most section and a pair from the front wheel wells. I remove 3 more from the second section, under the engine. This anti-gravity panel will not drop to the floor?
What is the trick?

*if* your question refers to an 87 or newer 928 with an undertray - then to remove the undertray you:
- remove 5 8mm screws that connect the undertray to the front airdam
- remove 1 8mm screw way up in each front corner
- remove 1 8mm screw on each side of the metal panel near the juncture of the plastic panel. These screws attach the metal panel to the body
- remove 2 8mm screws that attach the rear brackets of the metal panel to the underbody
- remove 2 8mm recessed screws IN the plastic undertray - these are the hard ones and probably why your tray has not come down. Look for two 1/2" circular holes near the NACA ducts towards the rear of the plastic undertray. You will need a flashlight and an 8mm socket on an extension. You'll need to use the light to guide the socket to the screw.
- last remove the 10mm screws in the middle of the undertray. It should then drop on your head. It's pretty light though.
Re-install the tray in reverse order.
Keeping the tray is a subject of some debate. My opinion is you to resist the temptation to not re-install the tray.

and download the directions on the timing belt change. One of the first things you do when you change the timing belt is remove the accessory belts.

Sorry for the bad form. It is an 88 S4 5spd, but this I don't quite get it has a GT rear bumper. Turns out I don't need to remove the chin spoiler at all. I have the bell pan loose but It won't drop aff in the rear. What is that pan just aft of the belly pan? I'm taking them both off for a while.
Thaks or the info. I plugging away.

Those are two sections of the belly pan. The front section should "hinge" down the floor leaving the aft one in place. You've probably missed a screw or two.
What do you mean by a "GT rear bumper"? do you mean it has a dual exhaust?
Removing the chin spoiler reqiures an act of congress and an army of trained cockroaches.

Got it - leave the chin spoiler in place.
By GT bumper - It says 928 GT not 928 S4. It is a single exhaust at the exit point but dual most of the way back. I got to look at that again.

I would NOT advise driving much without it! Tho it does have some 'ground effects' (or - as you refer to it as "anti-gravity'), it's main purposes are two-fold:
1 - Proper Air flow for cooling- even when STOPPED!
2 - PROTECTION of many engine parts (oil pan, AC Compressor, alternator, etc)
As to #2 above - there are MANY stories in the archives here of damage caused by small rodents, etc., run over.
The OEM pans are kinda cheesy - you may want to consider one of the aftermarket replacements available from any of the Big 3. I bought the DEVEK one about a year ago - and it is really great. BUT - the new one developed between 928 Specialists and 928 Int'l is really cool - including NACA ducts. Both are aluminium - rather then plastic.

OK, both pans are off and the chin spoiler is reattached. So far so good. The cat cover/pan is a little banged up. The car will be off line for a few days so I will straighten and clean and check the timing belt tension ... and let's not forget Job 1, the belts
I have an aluminum bell pan. It looks like the 928 Specialist picture - cool.
