I have two questions. My 83 has the full leather interior. I’ve got the typical curl near the defroster vents.
1. Is the pod suppose to be wrapped in leather too? My pod is vinyl so if it’s suppose to be leather as well it was removed by a PO.
2. What is underneath the leather? Console, arm rests, etc.
3. If it’s all vinyl underneath is there anything wrong with removing all the leather and leaving as is or should I just get the leather replaced on the dash?
NOTE everything thats covered in leather was originally hard plastic,
sometimes quite different colors than whats now in the car.
New leather repair covers are made to install after the dash substrate has been properly repaired.
Wrapping in vinyl is the usually the best long term repair, as its the least affected by sun.
For leather try some Skidmores leather restoration creme,
wipe it into the leather then let the sun bake it in, wipe it off in a few days then reapply as necessary
Some interior parts had their vinyl edges trimmed a bit to leave room for the leather to be glued on. A pillars and console come to mind. Also the switch surround is different for leather pieces that came from the factory.
My '84 also has the "Full Leather" option and the pod is vinyl like yours. I've wondered about that since there are obviously 928s with the pod also in leather. I've just assumed the leather pod was an additional option. Maybe Rob E knows?
One think you will likely find if you remove the leather is that the dash or item underneath is the original cast vinyl, but that it was a second. That means that it had some flaws in it from its production and that is why they used it for the one calling for leather cover.
Agree with Jerry. The dashboard under my brown 1982 leather was definitely a 'second'. It was a midnight blue vinyl dash that must have not had the vinyl formed correctly on some corners in manufacture - as a result, the factory apparently spent time filling and sanding the dash before covering it. No wonder these cars were expensive, spending that sort of effort to manually repair parts before installation!
Yellow patches appear to be factory filler applied prior to covering the dash with leather
Nate, I have never seen a factory leather covered pod, at least on anything earlier than a GTS special order. Others may have more experience with the question
Thanks for the wealth of knowledge. Looks like any which way it’s probably a mess under there. I’ll probably have it redone in leather keeping everything original as possible

I found in the VIN option thread that option IXF2 is "Leather instrument housing". Earliest example with it I could find in that thread was an '89. Almost all others in that thread are GTSs.

The XF2 equipment code was introduced during the 1989 MY but some cars were produced before with the leather covered pod. I have seen a 1987 S4 like this and it was certainly possible before.
