Default Got the S4 - some simple newbie questions.....

Picked up the 1989 S4 last night and took the long worrysome drive home (timing belt fear!!!!). Well, it wasn't that bad...I just worry too much.

Have found a few "glitches" that don't appear in the manual and I have a few simple questions about them.....

1. When driving home on the highway, I felt/heard this sound coming coming from behind my left foot whilst it rested on the pseudo-pedal. It was a distinct "pumping" sound. Seems that the brake-fluid reservoir is located right around this spot.....is this related to this sound/feeling?

2. Re: the Tensioner Boot for tensioner rebuild......Ordered the tensioner boot/clamp, etc. from 928 Specialists. From looking at the pictures of the tensioner, it appeared to me that the boot was rather large, but in the mail I received this round rubber part that looks like a plug - is this the "boot"???

3. Stereo - I found the stereo code behind the ashtray. It is a 5-digit code, but how do I enter it in when the CD player is saying "OFF" on it's display??

4. Anyone have a write up on how to clear the digital display in the instrument pod? - i.e., if I want to use the trip counter or timer, how do I reset it? (this is not in the on-line manual).

5. I noticed there is a window/headlight washer function by pulling back on the wiper control arm, but there is also another button to the left of the steering wheel that looks like a washer spray button - what is that?

...and finally, I have no interior lights when I open the doors. Could be bulbs (haven't tried new ones yet), but it seems odd that none of the lights work - not the "above the head" light, not the white door lights, not the hatch light and not these "red" doorjam lights. I tried adjusting the switches on each light and it's a no-go. Will take the bulbs out later today and try replacing them.

Thanks all!!! Lovin' this car, by the way!

1. no idea

2. that's the right boot

3. i think you have to power the unit for a couple of days to do this, ie leave it continuously on -- not sure as i do not have one

4. my s4 does not have this, dunno

5. intensive washer. draws from the aux bottle under the black cover in front of the windshield (under hood) and washes the crap out of any dead seagulls or mouse entrails you might have picked up on the windshield

...and finally: check fuses and ENSURE each is correct rating. this is crucial. also check ground points and door switches for clear ground. just test one of the lights with a volt meter / ohmeter....

Nichols' Site

A good place to start and to book mark for future reference.
Congrats on your car!!

Jeff, good move to take over that car!
The above link will take you to the fuse/relay section of an excellent site.
The tensioner boot is ~2.5" diameter with a 1" hole - does this describe your 'plug'?
AS soon as the rest of the snow clears here, motor mounts await one car, and the timing belt procedure for the other. See you on the roads - soon, I hope!

4 - Green Button, next to power door locks on center console.

5 - That is the "intensive washer" separate reservior infront of you on the fire wall.

Oh, and to reset the MPG and average speeds, you need to pull back on the coomputer control stalk as I recall (haven't actually driven by car since Oct 02, so its foggy)

Thanks Garth - the car seems great so far....I was supposed to have the belts done at Eurowerks, By Burt Page today, but the parts were delayed and I can't get in until next Wednesday, so I won't be driving too much till then....just incase - but it turned out ok, as it gave me the additional time to get the tensioner re-build stuff.

I've tried pulling back on the stalk to reset the displays (as it does say "Reset" on the stalk), but it does nothing.

That green button mentioned by Brendan, what is this thing for? It scares me!!

Update on the interior lights - I got them all working, except the drivers door (must be a bulb). It confused me at first, because when I closed the doors - the lights stayed, but they went out when I put the key in. Lots of cool gadgets to get used to.

I really wish I could figure out the stereo - can't wait to hear this 10-speaker set-up.

There is a button on the left hand side below the headlight switch. Press it in for several seconds. It will reset the trip odometer. It would be a good idea to get an owners manual, $20 from any of the big 3.

so first you beet the car possibly damaging it now you are worrying about it? that is baffling, I would park the car and do the timing belt ASAP and while at it replace all the rubber hoses in the bay heater hoses included!, whil you are at it you may consider taking the injectors out and having them cleaned/serviced/replaced as needed, while at it try to find the milage on the fuel pump est life of 60k miles, and if overdue just replace it,

Ha ha - yes, we did take it the max a bit when we test drove it - but I had to know what the car had (never driven one before) and also wanted to push it incase there were unseen problem. Plus, if I was going to push it, I'd rather do it when it's not in my name (bad, I know....).

I worry now simply because of the age of the belt - not many miles on it, not even at the change interval yet. The accessory belts all look great, but that really isn't an indication of how the timing belt would look. I don't think pushing it hard did any damage - it is a Porsche after all and pushing it can be a good thing sometimes.

On my 89S4 the reset button was between the ac button & doorlock button, on the console.

On my GT's its on the left, under the headlight switch.

On my 944 it was a stalk that protruded from the speedometer. Same on my 944S. On my 911SC it is also that way. And on my S4 5-speed it is a Zero button third below the light switch, same on my 1987 auto. On my previous and current '85's it is the same. On my dad's 911S it was a stalk in the speedometer, as well as in my dad's 911E, both 911T's and his 930. On his Rolls-Royce I think it was the same, and on his Aston Martin also. On my 1981 and my mom's 1982 Mercedes and my 1987 BMW it was ...... ad nauseam.
