if you have questions like this i would suggest that you revive the whole clutch system
pilot brg
TOB,
guide tube,
discs,
PP,
release arm bushing,
master cylinder modded to an 75mm length with a reduced length coil spring.
new blue hose,
new slave,
new Greg Brown flex line from the swaybar mount to the slave,
replaces the flex and short hard line over the starter .
while your at it get a new master cylinder and brake booster swap those in as well.

Thanks, Greg Brown. I read last night thru the many comments on the “Barn Find” clutch saga. Whew !
Thanks Mrmerlin for the comments regarding the GB hose ! I assumed a complete clutch review is necessary and thought a return spring might be the problem as I had on a car any years ago. , Larry

Don't gloss over the highlighted item in Stan's response
It sounds counterintuitive but when there is air in the clutch hydraulic system the pressure plate cannot push the pedal back into position (cannot overcome the assist spring).
Raised and reverse gear engages, forward(2nd) engages sporadically then coasts to stop even though engine at 1500 rpm. Stopped as didn’t want to overheat the clutch. Mice had feasted in my sunflower seed and shared space in the engine compartment. I’m humiliated but ask for advice with this status
Would anyone recommend going to a single clutch vs. replacing the dual clutch?
I don't know what others might suggest, but I personally prefer the earlier clutch. I'm not sure why anyone would switch from one system to the other, as they're both robust and adequate for their respective applications.
