All, I am losing my mind. I have finally saved up some money to buy my very first 928.
losing bids on two auctions and now it appears all hope is fading.
anyone know of a good buy for a 928 and also willing to help identify what not to buy?
budget is around 20k
First off, welcome.
You've found the most knowledgeable and friendliest community for these cars.
As was suggested above, read the "New Visitor" sticky thread. Lots and lots of valuable and useful info in there.
As a side note, listen to MrMerlin (Stan). ALWAYS listen to Stan.
Along with the "New Visitor" sticky thread, there's a "928s For Sale" sticky thread. It's never culled, so start at the back. The stuff from long ago was sold long ago. But they keep posting stuff that comes up for sale. The critique of these cars will be educational. There are guys on here who can look at a pic for 2 minutes and spot stuff that so-called "Porsche Mechanics" wouldn't find in an hour of inspection.
You may or may not find a viable car on that thread, but you can get a good idea of what's out there and what people are asking for them.
Welcome. Finding, owning, upfixing der Porsche can be a dry season. You never know where you might find the "right" one. Probably not on the major sites like cars dot com or autotrader, which just means you have to look there and everywhere, even Craig's List, Hemmings. Check the Marketplace here, but I think you have to be a member to get access. I don't know where you are located, but there are 5 major venues: once a year: Carlisle PA (end of April), Sharks in the Mts, June? in NC, Frenzy Sept., near DC, 3rd Coast TX and (I forget the name) LA. These are not necessarily sale events, but they attract 20 -- 40 cars and owners who might know of something. Cars FS pop up at these events whose owners may not be here.
What is your mechanical skill level?
Do you have to buy a sorted car?
Or do you want to work on it?
Makes a huge difference to what is available in your price range.
