100W bulbs in fog lamps (Results/Outcomes?)
Hey guys, I was thinking the other night. I drive rural roads and was wondering what the results of installing 100W bulbs in place of the 55W bulbs in the fog lamps. I was thinking about the effects of the 100 watts on the wiring system, can that much wattage melt any of the lamp components (wires, any surronding plastic? ) Has anyone done this? If so what are the results of your outcome. Thanks.
This is for my 1986 928s.

I have an '86.5 and I installed high wattage IQ lamps in my fog lights and now I would sure like to have the money back to spend on something of use. I have used those lights once in 1 1/2 yrs during a run through some fog in Monterey because I was getting so much glare back from the regular lights. The pattern is fine when using low beams and at slower speeds, but is useless when using high beams; I notice no difference then as my H-4s overlap and wipe out the fog lamp pattern on the side. The point is that if you are in an area so rural as to allow use of the high beams, you are probably covering ground so rapidly that you are overdriving the fogs anyway and you will have hit anything they will illuminate by the time it becomes visible, such as small animals on the side of the road. Maybe I could con someone into buying them and using the space for ducts.........

the foglights are for fog not aimed or focused for long distance . Try getting H-4 headlights the big 8 inch are best BUT even the 7 inch work far better and give you bulb choices .

You might try the driveing lights instead.
They're focused in a similer pattern to the low beams on the head lights, and IMHO, the low beams on any of the 7" head lights leave something to be desired.
If you want a cheap upgrade for the 7" headlights, go for the H-4 lamps, with the "off road use only" lights. The low beams are still only so so, but the high beams have plenty of light to splash around.

Some 928 foglights crack with the overwattage bulbs installed, and I would not be suprised if the wiring got toasty too. It does with overwattage bulbs in the headlamps.

Hi Michael,
I have been running 100 watters in the fog (and driving lights depending on YM) in 928s for over 15 years without any problems.
I have found that I prefer the 85 watt amber coated all weather Hella bulbs over the clear 100 watters in the fog lights as they really cut thru the slop much better. Since I have been doing a lot of mountain driving all my lfe and even more now, really good fog lights are a MUST !!
While really good H-4 or "H5" headlights with at least 80/100s are a must for swift driving, nothings beats a good set of fog lights aimed "at the ditches" on really curvy foggy roads at night.

Do you run 100w bulbs in the driving ("auxiliary high beam"?) lights on your 89? On the wiring diagram in the WSM, it appears that the driving lights are wired directly to the headlight switch.
