Question What block is this

Friend has engine from '88 Euro S4 aut. which has strange engine number:

Don't look like stamping has been altered in any way. I thought even factory spares had standard sequence numbering. What's this one then? So far everything points to normal S4 engine but...

Shouldn't be. It's probably just picture due to odd angle it was taken. Cut it from second pic and rotated 180.

It looks like "the new guy" stamped it by hand and made a mess of it. Of course M28/42 would be what is expected...

Possibly a Factory Rebuilt Short Block, I have seen a few with just the engine type stamped (without Serial Number), but haven't seen one stamped as sloppily as that one.

My 89 5 spd has no numbers at all. I can still see the typical machine marks so I know the numbers have not been removed.

I have seen a chassis with the original VIN all covered with *, and another complete VIn stamped under it (on the rhs guard cut out). It looked like the guy mis-stamped a 0 for a 6, tried to correct it, and finally gave up on it being clear, and * it out.
