Default Shark gets unusual attention

Here in the Bay Area, Porsches seem to be so common that rarely ever does anybody comment on my car. The weirdest in the past was in stop and go on the freeway, when a guy leaned out of an Excalade, asking me what year my car was. I told him, and he asked, if it was for sale. My reply: "No way!"

Yesterday I visited some friends in the hills above Scotts Valley, and decided to take the long way home. I drove down to Santa Cruz, and up Hiway 1. My allergies started killing me, and I had a harder and harder time keeping my eyes open. So I stopped at the convenience store at the intersection of Hwy 84 and Skyline Blvd. to get some Benedryl. There was a spot right in front of the store, so I pulled in there, next to a 996 convertible. The guys inside the store were checking my car out, said it looked like new, and asked all kinds of questions. When I left there were suddenly people standing in front of the store. I was too focused on keeping my eyes open to really notice, but now I realize the 996 had been gone, and they were all facing my car.

That was quite unusual! And they probably thought I was arrogant, because I totally ignored them...

This is a great topic!

I've run into that a few times. At a gas station a few years ago, this group of HD riders (Harley-Davidson) asked me when they started making those, they didn't think they were on the road yet! Maybe they thought it was a boxster?

Most "regular" folks don't seem to notice the Porsches beyond the 911. Maybe that's why everybody and his brother wants a 911 - because it is immediately recognized as something sporty and expensive.

A friend of mine redently did not believe me that a car we walked by was a Porsche. Only when I shoed her the crest did she believe. It was a Cayenne.

I was just thinking that yesterday, the 928 certainly got a lot more attention than the little redhead with the swollen eyes... Well, that was totally OK with me.

I was test driving a WRX to see what the hub bub was about and mentioned to the salesman that I'm looking for a 928. He had absolutely no clue what it was. I had to explain the lineage, years of production, HP/Torque ratings etc.

Funny, I drive my 180bhp targa (red of course) and cars move over with urgency, you can almost see their lips move ... "O-H-C-R-A-P---A---P-O-R-S-H" .... Driving the nearly 350bhp white S4 though, it's as if they want to get in front of me to make sure I don't break the precious speeding laws .... till, that is, I drop a gear and she howls so loudly that those same cars rock back-and-forth as they scatter ..... HAHAH!! :-) I love my Porsches ....

928s were truly 20 yrs ahead of their time. Thank God we can get them for about 20% of what they cost 20 yrs ago...Maybe Porsche should do what Shelby did with the Shelby 500 Mustangs... start making them again, just like they used to be.- Ruf

HA! HA! HA! Heinrich you crack me up. Isn't it the truth??

Actually, I have found the reverse to be true. More people seem to recognize the 928 and move over than my 914/6 or my 911. And then there are the goons in their crapped out pickups in Nevada that see you coming and see you flash and as you get up to them suddenly move into the left lane and then back again to interfere. Jealously makes people do strange things, I guess. I figure they are already so retarded that they have received their punishment....they just resent it.

I might have told the first part of this before... The 928 started it:

There was a young boy (about 10-12 years old) staying with some neighbors for a while. I think he was from somewhere in the Mid-West.

One day when I was washing my car, he came by and commented what an "old fashioned" car I had. He did not really look at the back of the car, which was full of shampoo anyway.

A few days later. I was out in the garage with the garage door open, he walked by again. He stopped, and read what it said on the back of my car. He goes "WOW - you've got a Porsch! You must be rich!!!"

A few days later he walked by my humble little town home again when my front door was open. He noticed the white marble floor and (further back in the house) the modern furniture in my living room (I have a pretty stylish blue Italian sofa, and very colorful rug and other stuff). He asked, if he could come in and see my house. Sure, I gave him a quick tour.

He had never in his life seen a modern (real) European style kitchen (mine has denim blue varnished doors and stainless steel hardware and appliances, with a flat glass ceramic cooktop). He totally freaked out. It was almost comical to watch...

A few days later, my neighbor (his aunt, who he was staying with) came by and asked me, if she could take a look at my home. The boy had driven her crazy. He had asked her, if he could go and live with me...

Nicole,
Here in Austin, where 928s seem to be fairly rare, but other Porsches and other exotics common place, I still get lots of attention. When in traffic I get plenty of admiring looks and waves. When stopped, people frequently comment or inquire about the car. Quite a few recognize the car as a 928 and good number say they have always admired and wanted one.

Yesterday I was taking my wife out on a dinner date. On the way to drop the kids off at grandmas house, we passed a gathering of ricer kids and their cars parked at one of the houses just down the street. Caught the attention of several who pointed and had everyone staring as we went by. On the way back out they were all gathered out at he curb waving and giving thumbs up as we rumbled back by. Wife was all smiles and said... "those kids do know a cool car when they see one."

And what she doesn't know, is that they all want to race you when you meet em on the street.

928 = lots of smiles per mile... Hard to put a price on that.

Regards,
Bill

I have gotten quite used to the looks, but somehow you always get about twice as many right after waxing the car. Well i guess its not that hard to believe, there is something about the brilliant black and those red tailights that give me a happy feeling when i come out of a store or school and know that I am walking towards... That car. brings a tear to my eye.. ::sigh::

Yep, I know what you are talking about. My '79 928 gets more attention than my E55 and the E55 is much rarer and much newer. I get sooo many positive comments on the car every time it's driven that it's always a joy to take it anywhere. The comments come at every gas station, parking lot, and stoplight from all walks of life. Soooo many people just love the 928 styling.

My 928 has been down for over three years but I'm making steady progress and it will be on the road as much as possible very soon. I can't wait to be able to do some of the auto X with Mark and our local Porsche club. I'll keep y'all informed on the progress. For now, still waiting on Electromotive to fix some issues.

Few people realize that you can buy a former $80k supercar that has style for less than many souped up ricers. And among those who do realize, there are always some who don't realize that a $80k supercar is not as cheap to maintain as a souped up ricer. That's when we end up with some of the sad examples we see on ebay...
