Is this the sound of a failing starter?

However this is not the reason for the no-start issue, so I can keep trickle charging the weak battery for testing purposes for now.
Probably this closes out this thread though since it was focused on the starter itself.

Not really clear, or I just am missing this:
Is your 89S4 an automatic or a manual version?
Slow, laborious cranking, on the cars with automatic transmissions, can be caused by excessive preload on the flywheel flex plate, leading to thrust bearing failure.
This is not an issue with the manual transmission models.....

Last night, on my phone, your list of pieces didn't show up.
Sorry.
BTW.....the last iteration of aftermarket starter motors from IMI (IMI-101-928) don't sound like you are cranking over a Toyota. They sound really nice.
And unlike the latest rebuilts from Bosch, they actually fit....and you can "clock" them so the mass of the starter is directly in the middle of the oil pan....and not off towards the left side.
If you really want a Bosch replacement, call 928 International.
Mark is now sending out original starters and having them rebuilt, instead of providing the "rebuilt" from Bosch, which doesn't fit worth a darn.
I've used several of Mark's rebuilds and they work great!

I'd also check all the starter connections themselves including the primary ground up there. Might want to take those apart, treat with Deoxit and make sure you have good, clean connections. If a battery is 5 years old and the car isn't driven at least once or twice a week and not kept on a maintainer, the batter is very suspect..
If you do end up needing to replace the starter, the hi-torque versions I have in both my 928 and 914 are sensational. When my 928 turns over and starts, it doesn't even sound like a 928 when it's cranking.
