I admittedly own the slow 928 as it is a MY81, and I also own a 1982 Yamaha XJ750J. The bike only has about 80 hp I believe compared to my cars 220+.
I love them both. Different type of high driving each one. The bike will flatout fly and is only a slow street bike. No way my bike could beat the 928 in top end (old street bike), but the bike sure gets me to 80 really quick and would beat the 928 in that respect.
In the end they are both a blast and I enjoy the heck out of each one.
On my bike, I pass other bikers and we always have a wave for one another. In my 928, seems most others driving nice sports car always notice me and give me a little wave or thumbs up also.....
They are both great rides and tho old, I would not trade them for much of anything else (maybe a newer faster 928...any offers lol)

I was gonna stay out of this one, but I'm also from both car and bike worlds. I don't mean to flame, but this is an ignorant statement -

bcdavis "And "lightening" a bike is not really that significant."

Lemme put it like this - 1kg on a good bike equals roughly 1.5hp in a straight line. A 10kg saving brings 15 extra ponies. Now bring the bike's power to weight ratio into play and whot you got?

Sorry, had to chip in on this one.

As for the Viper, I'll say this - To match a 'Busa, even a stock one, that is one seriously quick car.

Cheers,
Pierre.

I would have lost to the stock Busa, and I would have lost to that Viper.

My bike is lighter than a Busa, and has headers, jets, and different gearing.
But even with the mods, I am nowhere near 150 horsepower, which is about
what the stock Busa has. I'm probably around 120. But on the freeway,
like those guys were, my bike's weight advantage would not make a
huge difference.

But I have beaten a stock Viper before with a slower bike than my current bike.
But then again, street racing is not perfect.
Many owners of exotic cars are not always "racers".
The guy in this video was obviously into cars.
So he is going to do a good job with his shifting, etc...
The guy I beat could have been just a rich guy with a new toy,
trying to play with me, and got beat because he was slow on
the throttle, bad shifting, etc...

I was skinnier then too! Hahaha!

I have also "played around" with my friend who has an older Viper.
The 928 is definately slower. But on the freeway, it was not like I
got totally spanked. I stayed within a few carlengths. But off the
freeway, he would lose me totally, away from stoplights, etc...

Damn torque and big tires!

Those bikes were FAST. The modfied ones - you could see the guys HOLDING ON when they shifted. Damn.

But watch that video again - and notice the TIME on the gold-dashed bike. There were 15-30 minutes between each run - and that Viper guy KNEW that he was getting heatsoak - hence the methenol (which was actually mostly water - it was washer fluid). There was no time for that car to cool off correctly by the end - and he was racing DIFFERENT, cooled bikes.

Now - I have yet to be able to decipher - did that Viper have an IC?

Here is another - the Nitrous will provide a cooling effect to the intake charge, but its mute since the race was not even even with the modded bikes.

I'd MUCH rather have the viper. Any day, any time, any place. I have no interest in being a human missle. Thats what Missles are for.

Here's the real test....... How much did the Viper guy spend to go that fast vs. the 'Busa guy?

I just want to add one idea. It's a little sketchy on a bike at 120+mph, and it is pretty easy in a 928 at those speeds. It's safe, stable and you feel protected in the german space pod. On a bike, you have to be stupid to race with a car when you don't know who's driving. One small mistake between either of you can get you killed. Injury is very real to me because I have raced motocross for 21 years and have crashed countless times and broken a lot of bones. It takes me a while to describe all of the injuries I've had to someone. Some guys that have only ridden street may have only gone down once, twice, or not at all; so some of them are fearless.

Every other time I go out on the bike I almost get squashed by a car. But I still love it.

The pic is my Honda RC51. It is the 2 wheel equivalent of the 928. Love it.

I would use it if it cleared the road of "lappers". It's not my stuff in the background.

Can't wait for some more nice weather.

"The main point is that a STOCK Hayabusa kept right up with a 900hp Viper."

The first few runs the Viper pulled hard on the stock Hayabusa. That Viper, when it wasn't heat soaked, would handily beat most bikes on the road and that's if the bike rider was really good and had the guts to go that fast on their bike. There aren't too many bikes with the top end acceleration of a Hayabusa or ZX11.

I also heard from a friend of mine, who says he nows the guy with the Viper, and he says that the front-end splitter really messed up his aerodynamics.

But yes, that Viper would beat most bikes.
But a stock 928?

Only if the guy is really not trying very hard, or does not know how to ride well.

I once had a Road and track article that had basically one of every
class of dragster and hopped up street racer and compared them all the
way up to Top Fuel. In the mix was a bone stock ZX-12 I think with stock
tires. To make it short it basically killed everything up to Street
Stock and all the hot rod Vettes, Vipers and 800HP exotics. But they did
point out that it was bone stock, California emissions and had the stock
tire which it spun for nearly an eighth of a mile. IOW it wasn't fair
since it wasn't hooking up at all. Had it I think it would have beaten
the Street Stock and gotten close to the Pro Stock.

I don't know why car guys just wont accept the fact that they will never
beat a bike. It's a simple power to weight ratio. 450 HP at 3300 pounds
is a ratio of 7.3. A Huyabusa is 475 pounds and 175HP for a ratio of
2.7LBS/HP. No comparison. Sure you can hop a viper up to 800HP but
that's still only 4.1 and you can make a Huyabusa 260HP for a ratio of
1.8. That's a funny car ratio.
