@FredR The condenser is literally falling to pieces, the fins are unraveling themselves so not good at all. Main concern is this restricting airflow to the radiator behind it. I'll not be going anywhere in it anytime soon as the tb/wp and fuel hoses need sorting first. Plenty to do!

As you have prioritized doing the TB/WP it would be a good time to plan on removing the radiator and having it cleaned inside and out. Easy given the coolant is drained. Remove the remnants of the condenser [it is a bit tricky getting to the hold down bolts on my model year]. Then you will also have a lot of space for inspection.

By the way the cable[s] running from the starter motor/alternator to the hot post are not brown they are red. What you see is decrepit remains of what many years ago was competent insulation. If nothing else plan on replacing the power cables. The cables from the 14 pin connector also need careful inspection. Personally I would replace them if there is any doubt- particularly the 4mm2 cable on pin 14 that probably looks anything but the yellow colour it is supposed to be. It is not too difficult to make this harness but it is a bit tricky nontheless. I then ran my power cables independent of the rest of the loom.

Thanks very much, yes that makes perfect sense to do that at the same time as it's coming out to allow better access, my local indie is doing this one for me, I wonder if I can get to it to repair before it goes in?

Thanks for the info on the power cables btw

Quick bodywork update, managed to get some very helpful advice from a local pro detailer who has taken me through the first steps of cutting and polishing single stage paint, I haven't got very far yet but I'm in no hurry and this wing is looking like glass...

Yup. Red is one of the worst for deterioration and one of the best for restoration.

It ends up looking really bad, but can be brought back to looking really good.

I had an 85 MR2 that looked like the 944 above. Totally oxidized, more 'pink' than red.

I never cared, so I didn't do anything (it had a lot of other stuff that took priority).
The guy I sold it to when I bought my 944 spent a good couple of days hand polishing it.
It ended up looking really, really nice.

And then the underneath finished rusting out and the front suspension collapesed.

Thanks @Billu I have been reading that funnily enough, a very detailed read.
I was very fortunate on Wednesday to have a visit from a local, highly experienced detailer who gave me some valuable advice and more importantly, confidence - after a long discussion and some experimentation I have a good, gentle way forward with this paint, looking good already

Hmm, just found mayo in the oil filler - I know to look out for it - why on Earth did I not check for this when I viewed the car! Quite a bit of moisture in there, this'll be fun!

Not what you want to see but not necessarily disastrous either.

What state is the engine oil in and same for the coolant inside the expansion tank? A cooing system pressure test at 15 psig would not go amiss.

Thanks @FredR

The coolant is almost crystal clear, the oil on the dipstick is pretty black, not been changed for years

If there were a leak path one might expect contamination both sides. What you are more than likely seeing is moist air forming an emulsion with oil vapours probably because the thing is not getting hot enough to vapourise and expel the moisture that is probably contained in the blow by gases as well.

I am not familiar with the pollution control features on your model year but there may also be features that need checking out to ensure it is working optimally. Doubtless some of the chaps will have some useful tips up their sleeves. Not sure if it would help but after a run you could leave the car ticking over whilst hot and leave the oil filler cap off for a few minutes that should help vent any moist air. A blast down the A30 to Exeter and back is probably the best thing for the car if all else proves positive.

Thanks mate, that would make sense, lifted my spirits as well The car has been sat near water for some time, not great for a car like this and its saving grace is the the PO ran the engine fairly regularly, but I suspect not enough to get it cooking. I'll get all the Hellmans cleaned off tomorrow and run it up. Funny, there was a lot moisture in the filler filter insert dripping off.

The MOT is on Wednesday, if it passes I will take the long way home, possibly via Exeter!

The hood is coming up nice, red paint shine deepening , more pics soon.

might be worth doing a chem test on the header tank - see if there is a colour change....
