Default New to 928S - it arrives tomorrow!

Hi all,

I am a new 928S owner and wanted to say hello and introduce myself, hoping to share some of my experiences here.

Long admired the 928 and I have bought the best I can afford, in exactly the spec I wanted - Guards Red with black seats and red piping, so excited about it.

The car has been kept on the road, it did have a decade of storage about but it needs some TLC, there is some minor bits of rust and the bonnet paint is flat. The engine and gearbox seem good, mechanically the car is better than expected, cosmetically not so but it's more dirt than damage. So, I am looking forward to working through things over the coming months, or years; my Porsches are weekend / fair weather cars, so I can take all the time I need. I'll post some pics when it comes off the trailer tomorrow (only one more sleep to go!)

My plan is to tidy this car up myself as much as I can and keep hold of it - it looks straight and runs great looks but tired and proper sorry for itself. It seems to be a fairly 'honest' car in that it's not been tarted-up or presented for sale in any way whatsoever, so doesn't seem to be hiding too much, who knows! I am in a slight panic since I have heard plenty of stories of spiraling costs (what have I done?!!) but I do have a threshold of how far I'll go before I say enough's enough!

So the list of things to do from memory:

Proper clean inside and out - foam, claybar, polish and wax

Wheels - refurb, they're black and I want them silver

Interior - seats out and deep clean carpets, g101 all plastics - source and replace the odd few bits that are busted/missing

Sunroof needs fixing...

Passenger window slow up and down - sort

Wheel bearings front replacement

I think there is minor oil seepage - so clean down and try to spot the source

General lubricate everything that moves.

Deep clean seats, look at switch contacts as the heated seats work sometimes etc.

Check hoses and replace where needed

All fluids drain and replace, check old oil for bits, replace belts anyway, basically major service

Some corrosion to get rid of - all seem on surface and not penetrated so I should be able to do these here in my garage.

That should be enough to keep me busy over the next winter...

Thanks for readling, I cannot say how excited I am, I've had Boxsters for a while which are great but this is a whole different thing altogether, in probably every way! Wish me luck, will I need it?...

Congratulations. Many here share the excitement you have about your "new" car. You'll find this forum very helpful if you have questions(issues) Someone here has "been there done that" and most are very quick to offer their advise. You will be beaten with reeds and placed in a burlap bag if you do not post pictures of you new acquisition. It is always helpful to add a "signature' that appears on every post or response you make. Include the year/ and whether it is a manual or auto car and state if it is a US or Euro version. and add a location as there may be other quite near you to help.

Read the FAQ (frequently asked questions) section.
The first things to address are the timing belt/water pump/and associated parts. a failure in this area is expensive as you have an interference engine.
reduce the risk of fire from likely old fuel lines. as well as the high pressure steering hose if the are not documented as already changed.
Enjoy! and get there pictures up before you get a tongue lashing from us all

@crushingday Thanks for replying! Great to find an active forum, I am on Boxa.net here in the UK and there's a lot going on, so this is great to find.

Pics to follow asap and will do my sig as you suggest. Thanks for the tips, yes fuel lines I meant to mention as I have heard the horror stories!

Car is an 1985 S auto 4.7, I'm in the UK so Euro spec. Guards Red, just awesome, I feel very lucky to finally have the poster car coming in 24hrs!

Welcome aboard! Guards red is the best color, and some say the fastest as well
Can't wait to see pictures of your car. As Ross mentioned, read the FAQ thread at the top of the forum all the way through.

@linderpat Thanks mate!

Yep, this is a beauty in the making, always wanted one, then when I went and saw this despite it needing some work I just had to have it! The shape, the sound, just awesome! I see you've got the tan interior - I love tan interiors, had one in an old Alfa 3.0 GTV, looked stunning!

Pics coming as soon as I get the car in all its shabby glory!

Congratulations!

crushingday already mentioned fuel lines and power steering lines - both great tips.

I would add a suggestion to buy a can of Deoxit, some 53 relays, and an assortment of good quality fuses, then go through the Central Electrical panel in the passenger footwell..
Replace all the fuses with new ones of the correct rating, replace the core relays, and give all contacts a dose of Deoxit.

You can find a fuse and relay chart at http://www.928intl.com/repair.htm if you don't already have one.

Welcome.

Since it hasn't actually arrive yet, you can be forgiven for not posting pics.
BUT...

You will be mercilessly nagged and ridiculed if you don't fairly soon.

As noted, read the 'New Visitor' sticky.
Also, there's a sticky "VIN Check" where you can post your VIN and see what options it came with.

In the "New Visitor" sticky, there's a really good how to write up on the sunroof.

Windows may well be 'old and grotty' grease in the mechanism. Very common. Not too big of a job to pull the door card (interior panel) and get it cleaned up.

If you don't know when it was done, plan on a "timing belt/water pump" (TB/WP) replacement.
If you don't know when it was done, plan on replacing all the underhood fuel lines.

Failure of either can be catastrophic.

@Matt Propson Cheers mate for the reply, glad to hear from long-term owners, I'll let you know on any parts required if I can't source in the UK. Have a great day!

Thanks, yes the above all factor at the top of my list, the car has a fire extinguisher in it so a PO has had similar worries.

The car has been used but kept outside for a long time, hence faded paint and some corroded areas but hopefully I can at least stop the clock ticking on these

Thank you again, can't wait till it gets here later today!

Thanks for your reply, sure has arrived! And, in all its shabby faded glory is far better than I remember from when I saw it at the weekend with the PO. I have photos coming - work commitments come first today but will try and get some uploaded tonight - ish!

Took it out to get fuel - I know I need to do belts and fuel lines etc couldn't resist the allure of the dream car on the drive... Awesome in every way, can't wait to get the polisher on it this weekend, after a snow foam and clay bar treatment that is. Time to order some parts, looking at the fuel line kits that are available, lots to do!

Off to work now!
