Rebuilding Cruise Control Module: DIY Edition

My cruise control hasn't worked for all but a month or so of my ownership. It started struggling to hold speed and now testing it, it drops 10mph then accelerates until you stop it.
A quick look at the module reveals it's been gone through before. The components look original judging by the brown varnish coating them. Nothing looks visibly burnt, but it does have a sort of acrid stank about it.
With the large, discrete components I'm not finding a show stopper for a DIY rebuild, yet.
I've gone through several threads about here and elsewhere. None of the components seem to be proprietary.
Anyone had any luck?

Hi Geo,
If you want to have a go yourself before shipping it to Kris, I used the info here http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/technic.../MyTip1098.htm
It’s not 100% correct for the 928 but it was the best information I could find that’s public.
I replaced the 2 x 47uF caps that are in the middle of the board (the two round metal cans in the photo), Q9 & C19 and the 2 chips.
I also made a test bed that created the speed pulses with buttons to set the cruise etc but that’s was more to understand how it worked.
My suggestion is to try the most likely failures first, so clean up the underside with paint stripper, reflow all the solder joints (don’t heat each joint more than you have to and do alternate sides of the chips so you don’t overheat one spot), replace the 3 capacitors and then take it for a test drive.
Good luck with it.
