Please let us know if you test the starter a few more times and have the same clicking solenoid. I have the same issue right now. I have tried (2) rebuilt Bosch starters, replaced my battery ground, cleaned all grounds on the car, I have the Pod apart now and will replace the ignition this weekend. Hopefully my clicking problem will resolve. I have a '78 manual US car. Its been 2 months trying to sort this same problem. If I don't get results I plan to use my car as a submarine like in Risky Business!

lol I just barely bought my '78 Manual Euro from Sweden, so I'm not quite to that breaking point yet, nor do i ever hope to be there, it only becomes an major issue if it leaves you stranded somewhere needing a tow. Especially for me because me and my wife swore off cell phones about 7 years ago...

Yeah, i will try to bring it somewhere to have it tested as soon as my other one arrives. I might brave a trip to work with mine tonight...she really needs to be driven...
my problem was that I had a single click that would occur when i tried starting followed by silence and no cranking. Is this the same problem you are having? or are getting multiple clicks? I'm not sure how different the US and Euro is in regards to the starters? Maybe the experts can weigh in.

Quick update in response to MrMerlin, I spent almost three hours last night reinstalling the new ignition and putting the pod back together (long screws were a PITA - please chime in on the secrets to easily reinstalling the gauge cluster and pod alignment...lol...took me forever and I still cant get the right side long screw in properly). Otherwise, I did a quick test last night and I have succeeded. I removed the coil wire, but the car turned over quickly and starter engaged well. I have replaced everything in the system, except the actual wire harness so I believe the end culprit was a corroding old starter and the ignition switch. I will connect the coil wire and test the car this weekend. I also replaced spark plugs, fuel filer and accumulator, so I want to take my time when starting and check for leaks when time permits. But thank to all who helped! -Anthony

The far right side screw (bolt) that goes through a swiveling bracket? Is that the one you are referring too?

Assuming that a ‘78 pod mounts the same as later pods, then...

If so, remove the pod and install that bolt and bracket first then mount the pod and cluster.

That one bolt and the bracket are supposed to stay in place, not be removed. Read Dwaynes write up, he made the same mistake and discovered it when trying to reinstall the pod. The pod will just slip down over a piece on the right side.

Instructions here, skip to the end:

I have already ordered a starter, so i might as well replace it while I'm in the mood and plus, there is no guarantee that it couldn't benefit from a new one.
But i took Harlot (the name i gave her) for a celebratory joy ride around town to ensure any battery power lost was recovered and to give me some joy before going to work.

I will update again after I get the new starter in to let you know if it seems to make any difference or not. Thank you guys for all your help! yet again!

Update, tried starting the car after the new ignition switch install. Seemed to work for a period of three cycles then went back to the solenoid clicking with no starter engagement. I guess its time to break out the voltage tester and start from the solenoid back. I am still suspect of the second rebuilt Bosch starter?? My problem seems to have no rhyme or reason. However, whenever I work on the car it will start for a period of two or three cycles then only go into the solenoid click.

Is it failing to start when the engine is hot? Could be a heat soak issue with the solenoid.

Thanks! I figured it was a fitting name! My wife was a little less impressed with the name but she still thought it suited it, seeing the 928 is expensive and European
Just feels like I'm cheating every time I spend time working underneath my 928...at the rate things are going, she's just gonna have to get used to it! lol

Not attempting to derail the conversation from ajc283's problem but I have another car starting question:

So it's a little hard to describe but sometimes when I start the car, it makes a screech type noise (it doesn't sound like a belt), almost as if I was holding the key too long after it already started. Happened to me twice now and I'm not sure what it is. The car started even after making this noise, but it didn't sound healthy. It sounds kinda like when you drag a heavy piece of furniture across a wooden floor...-_- Looked through the forums a bit and if I took a stab in the dark I would say perhaps it had something to do with the flywheel. (perhaps the same problem from this post) Any thoughts?

Thanks again guys!

The car is a 5-speed, and I believe the starter relay is only found on automatic cars When I looked up the relay on the schematics, in the position is a metal wire bridge. Unless I am mistaken?

It seems to happen randomly, cold or hot. This morning I tried to start the car and got the solenoid click. Maybe I should find a used starter and swap this back into the car. I have read posts where people have had issues with these "rebuilt" Bosch units...has anyone had the same random start/ no start/ issues with the "rebuilt" bosch units?

The starter that is currently on the 928 i own is a bosch unit 'made in germany'. I don't know how old it is but from the rust and grim i'd say it is at least 10 years?
