Well I finally started the intake refresh. This is just about getting it on the road for the first time in my ownership so keeping it basic. I want to learn a bit as I go and keep I pretty much stock and on a budget. The car runs and I have driven it but this refresh is about safety and replacing bits that are leaking.
I have the injector rails out unfortunately some of the injector plugs crumbled so they will need to go on the shopping list. I assume its not just the plug that gets replaced they will need to be soldered in. New hoses will go in and I will just clean the injectors up with carby clean and check them with a 50 dollar ebay injector tester just to see the spray pattern looks ok and consistent across all. Resistance across all of them is 16.5 ohms.
I was greeted by intake gaskets that are pretty well glued to the runner and head. Easy goes scraping it away with a vacuum on I also assume. Naturally without doing damage.
Access to the intake runner bolts is a little tricky I used swivel socket adapters so far. Not sure what other tool may be easier.
Anyway here are some pics. I also scraped off the bonnet heat shield as it was that crumbly I got sick of it getting in my hair every time I bumped it and more importantly I didn't want bits dropping in the engine bay as I strip the intake.
With the lockdown I‘ve never had so much time to do things on the car, while you’re in there I’d suggest replacing hoses you now have easy access to and also check the operation of the cold start valve. The three rubber throttle body mounts are normally shot as well and cheap to replace.
Thanks guys appreciate the input. Yeah whatever I find needs it will be replaced. I intend to get most of the stuff within the V removed. Replace vac lines and fuel hoses. Good tip on the throttle body.
I thought I would get the spider off in one hit and then realized it would be easier to get to the bolts as the legs came off individually.
I will look up how to check the cold start valve not that I have had any issues with it starting.
Also just discovering I can change the plugs on the injectors by de-pinning them as an option.
Among Easter duties I have the rest of the spider off.
Yep the throttle body is loose. I assume its the mounts I didnt try tightening the bolts its all about un-doing them at the moment.
What are the dos and donts or recommendations for intake and plenum to keep it looking mint and clean. I have started running them through a ultrasonic. I dont mind the standard look but to gloss them up a bit might look better. How about a light wire wheel. May not be a good idea with factory paint.
Mapped out the Vac lines today. I didnt realise there were so many and I mean not just the engine bay they duck off everywhere.
A bit of oil in the intake. I had already cleaned it out once this is new oil just after a couple of short runs around the block. Guess a baffle is in order.
Ultrasonic wash.
I removed the brittle hard plastic from the MAF plug back to where it was soft again. The wiring looks OK a bit of deoxit and a re wrap with that self adhesive tape...whatever its called?

This is what you want - X-Treme self fusing silicone rubber tape. It is good in an oil environment and is good in high heat environments too. I use it for these applications all the time, and it holds up very well. It's a must have in the toolbox. When you use it, you stretch it first, then wrap it tight, and it fuses to itself as you wrap it. There is no glue on the tape. Link: https://www.xtremetape.com/
