Headlights kill engine
Hello everyone. I was looking for some help with an odd intermitant problem. sometimes when I turn on the headlights it kills the engine. the running lights ok and the buckets up ok but when the headlights turn on it kills the motor. can turn all off again and restart ok. What do you all think and has someone else had this issue.
Thanks,
Heinz

This — ^ would be where I would start.
If the lights work with motor off and ignition on then use/turn on accessories - e.g. HVAC blower, turn signals, etc. - and see what happens. If each subsystem works individually when no others are in use, but ‘wonky’ behavior results when more than one is used then your have clear evidence of a bad ignition switch.
Obviously, do this with a fully-charged known-good battery and have a charger handy.

Apparently the contacts internally are different, probably mass issue

All very interesting comments. I was thinking it might be my headlight relay but looks like that may not be the case. I do have LED headlight bulbs installed by PO but would not think that should cause problem, of course I am mystified as to how the headlight circuit in general has anything to do with running of the engine and that is part of the reason why I asked you all. It seems like most comments point to the ignition switch which I believe is in pod behind the lock cylinder but I forgot as it has been several month since I took out the pod and the problem was there before that.
thanks again for all of you who responded.

before you replace the IG switch,
remove one headlamp connector then with the car running turn on the HL part of the switch,
see if the engine dies,
turn the HL part of the switch back to parking lights,
then check the other HL.
ALSO what was the last thing you fixed?
Any chance you have added a fuse or two to the CE panel or installed a relay in the wrong spot?
Might one of the switch connectors under the pod be shorting like the one for rear foglamps

Hello everyone,
I ran a few tests today. When key set to acc. lights come up and on ok , tried signals ok, wiper ok, washer ok, then when I removed the key I tried the light switch and the buckets do not come up but the headlights, accessory lights, and running lights all come on. Also this evening I ran the car and turned on and off the lights while running, they came up and on but diid not kill the engine this time. This has been my issue before that the problem comes and goes so difficult to diagnose properly. I did not drive the car but only ran it about 5 minutes or so, so not sure if heat or cold has anything to do with it. It feels like a short of some kind.

Grab a can of Deoxit, disconnect the battery, separate the 14 pin connector, use a wire to clean the male ends, squirt Deoxit into the female ends and on the male ends.
Reassemble making sure the plug is fully seated before reconnecting the battery.
Had an '89 Greg Brown stroker in here. Customer complained the car would die when turning the lights on or turning the AC on. Did the above and car never had the problem again. I based the solution on the fact that all power goes through the 14 pin connector and that particular to the 89+ the low oil pressure warning would flash even after the car restarts. It just made sense to me.
And while you are at it carefully inspect the wires going into the plug and the insulation of the big wire.
