Default Antenna OEM style...

My old antenna is sticking and starting to make a grinding noise and occasionally sticks as it extends and retracts. I've cleaned and lubed the mast, but it may be an issue internal to the gears or teeth on the antenna mast. I have searched through the forums for antenna posts and I saw a few recommendations for non-OEM styled aftermarket options, but I'd like to keep the stock look/function.

Has anyone replaced the OEM antenna with something like a universal Hirschman electric antenna or is it best just to get a used original antenna from 928 INTL?

In short, what are the options for a stock looking electric antenna replacement?

Rob Edwards has spent some time with them. Hopefully he will chime in

Take it apart and inspect it. Theyre pretty simple to R&R.

Take the mounting off the top and run it up. The mast and cable should come all the way out. Have someone catch it so it doesn’t fall on the car. If you find stripped/broken teeth on the cable, you can replace the mast assembly.
That’s the easiest.
Best is to remove it from the car and open it up and also replace all the hardened grease.
If the mast cable is ok, you probably have worn internal gears.

Agreed, pull it out of the car and open it up. There's a small spring-loaded roller wheel (maybe 18-20 mm in diameter) that guides the plastic antenna mast into the drum, that wheel is under a _lot_ of spring tension and gets whatever crap is on the mast loaded into its bearing. Disassembly is straightforward, 4 screws for the cover, 1 hex screw for the antenna tube that then screws out of the case, 3 screws for the motor assembly, and 1 or 2 (can't remember) for upper limit switch board. Take a pic of where the 3 electrical leads connect, and then you can take all the guts out of the case. Clean the hell out of everything, pop the e-clip off the drum and clean out the old grease and add back some new Superlube or somesuch. Make sure the roller turns freely. I have done a couple, the worst was badly frozen but I soaked it in acetone/ATF and eventually worked it loose and turning freely.

Worst case there's a guy in Spain who has replacement rollers, but shipping is a beyotch. This guy: https://www.ebay.com/usr/next_level_trade?ul_noapp=true

To test them you need a 12V source, ground the brown wire, and then you need to supply +12V to BOTH yellow and blue wires to get it to extend, and then only 1 of the wires to retract.

Oh, and be careful with the threaded ring that mounts the antenna to the fender, it's super fine thread (something weird like M14 x 0.8) and a bit fragile from being exposed to the elements. Clean and Kroil it before trying to turn it.

Disassemble and repair, bit if the gears are shot, an aftermarket looks just the same but with less motor noise.

I tried repairing mine but the main plastic gear that is driven by the motor is cracked and binds the worm gear so it sits in a shoe box to this day. Otherwise they are fairly easy to r&r as stated above.

Anyone have a source for replacement parts for one that uses a smooth mast?

I recommend the Hirschmann Auta 2050 which is a good model. Thats what I put on my 84 928S. I went to the parts diagrams looked up the part number and the Auta 2050 came up as OEM replacement. I had a similar problem with my old antenna, but mine stopped working completely and I know what the problem, but it takes time. I bought the Auta 2050 from here. Here's the link. https://www.ebay.com/p/1222989461

Started in 89 but easy to put onto any other year, just gotta drill a hole. It has a built in amplifier as well.

Get it from Porsche or our suppliers P#92864520100 for ~$160.

What model is the antenna? Let me know and I can find you a source.

The roof antenna is for 89-95 models (S4, GT and GTS). The part # for antenna is 92864520100 and the antenna has a booster, so if the booster is bad the part # is 96464517301 or if the mast if broken the part # is 92864590200 I recommend for those parts getting directly from Porsche (if wanted new) or 928intl.
