Jim described it best as a bitchy clutch. difficult to engage without effort.typically associated with clutches that don't have the suppression springs in them. The spec stage 3+ took all the fun out of driving my 928. some people like that race clutch feel. For me it got old.

The friction material used to handle high torque applications I very "grippy" sonit doesn't slide smoothly against as the metal flywheel at the engagement point. This cause rhr driveline to shudder or chatter. A sprung hub or marsailles springs allow a little bit of flexibility that helps smooth the engagement. The Spec discs I showed in my earlier picture have neither and are terrible in the regard, but they don't slip.

thanks ! i have now the later single 928 clutch set in my '82 . Seems smooth as i just test drove it for the first time.
I bought a new slave but had to extent the rod a bit and weld a "box" on the rear of the lower bellhousing pan to make extra room for the fork .

I just used that set now as i bought it new in 2008..... on advice of my race shop to not use the twin disc anymore.

Advantage ? i didn't had to pretension the clutch to be able to mount the fork ….as i see here several times and in the WSM..... if i remember correctly the fork tip is 11 mm more aft now compared to the oem setup. The fork was hitting the bellhousing , cut a hole and it was approx it's thickness of 4 mm. The fork came just rise with the outer bellhousing contour .

i had once a Tilton clutch set in my rally BMW....don't know the disc's material but it lasted 4 rallies…. than they told me i could NOT play with the clutch. It was a on/off clutch.
I know of someone who ruined such clutch just driving the car on a trailer…...and of course playing a bit with it .
Swapped it back for a oem clutch set and so far ...2 years/sure 10 rallies later....no problems.

Isn‘t the grip of the sport clutch a real task for the gearbox? Used and broken syncros and gears ?

Yes. The race Tilton clutches do not like to be slipped. They need the driver to get their foot off of the pedal very quickly.

This is a completely different animal, without the metallic discs.

I tortured Mark Anderson in a session at Willow Springs in the Zombie with this metallic triple disc Tilton clutch. He kept having to remind me not to slip it. You read these books about being smooth to be faster. Bull****, there's no Venn diagram where 'Tilton racing clutches' and 'smooth' co-exist.

Actually, the idea of using small diameter lightweight metallic lined discs is to reduce the spinning mass and make life easier for the synchros.
I'd imagine that the chatter is not good for anything.

I've got one of this "batch" of clutches left....and I'd like to sell it, so I can move forward and do the late model "single disc", the '85/'86 single and dual disc versions and the early model single/dual disc version. (Mary won't let me move forward until I can show this to be a viable product.)

You guys find someone who is on the "fence" and I'll sell it for $3995....and I'll give everyone that has ordered one, the same price.

This is so close to my cost, I can guarantee they will never be cheaper than this! (To be able to do this, we need to tell Mary that this is the "Christmas/New Years Special".)

Wish I had $4k laying around and that mine was worn out where i had to buy one now, as this is the one and I'd love to improve my clutch action, but I spent so much doing the motor swap this summer that I'm tapped out

I thought you said I got the last one. Am I included on the ones sold? Hadn’t heard anything back after the last communication so I thought I better check.

Thanks

I think Precision Motorwerks is closed for the holidays as I heard after the new year. I wish I was off so I gladly applaud those that earned the time and take it.
