Anyone in greater Atlanta area willing to let me test drive their 5 speed?
So I've been lusting after 928s for years, but I have actually never driven one. I plan on buying a manual 16v variant, but I'm trying to decide if I should bite the bullet now or if I can wait - and driving the car is definitely part of that decision. I suppose I'm asking to meet my hero. You might have seen my recent question asking if you would own a 928 as your only car, and seen some of the replies asking "what's the worst that could happen?" After asking myself that, I think it might be possible, which brings me to this - I need to drive the car before I decide to further pursue one, which leads me to ask: is there anyone in the Atlanta area (preferably north side of Atlanta, I'm in Alpharetta) who would be willing to let me drive their manual 928? I do daily drive a manual, although it's not a dogleg so I'll need to be very aware of that.

May I borrow your redhead wife/girlfriend? I have my own blonde but really want to try a redhead before I shop seriously. Anybody have good luck with a redhead as a long-term option? I can only have one at a time...

Nice offer^^Also check out: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-meetings.html it's local to you and they meet the 2nd Mon each month. Another option is to look for a few 928's in your area and take a few for a test drive..who knows you may end up buying it. T

So what happened with the red-headed wife? What did she say or do for you? I was married for 29 years to a red head. Much happier with my blond for the past 11. Trust me, there's a difference!

Jeremy, if you're ever up near Clemson, I'd be happy to take you for a ride in my supercharged 6-speed convertible if you want to see what's possible from a 16v motor with forced induction and long Corvette gearing. The insurance policy on my Porsches doesn't let anyone other than my wife or I drive them though.

Power certainly is intoxicating, and I've been specifically trying to avoid getting ruined like that. I have no desire to chase numbers at increasing cost, increasing illegality, and increasing lethality. Further, more than 3-400 is wholly unnecessary for the road in any car that's a reasonable weight. When I'm asking to drive someone's manual, I'm mostly looking to get an idea of the ergonomics - how heavy is the clutch, throttle, etc, is the gear shifter satisfying or BMW rubber, etc. I expect I'll be tentative and cautious, especially considering I'll be in the driver's seat of someone else's metal wife.

And the 16 valve examples are especially funky. And most need AT LEAST 1st and 2nd gear synchros, a this point in time.
Almost any 16 valve car you will find needs 20K worth of work....just to make it reliable and a driver, unless you are fortunate enough to find one that has been mechanically restored and someone's widow has zero idea of how much the dearly departed husband spent on it.
When it comes right down to it, the only reason why anyone would want a 928 is because of the looks and the uniqueness. You either "absolutely have to have one" on an emotional basis, or you will not like it (and it will joint the thousands of examples that are out there, where someone has spent every penny they can find on mechanically restoring it and have just "given up" and want out....because there is still an entire mountain of pennies that still needs to be spent.
