On my S4 I put on Toyo TS1's I loved em but over $800 for the set. What are you having luck with? I have 17" antera's and don't plan on tracking the car.

Jim;

I've had great luck w/ the Yoko AVS 100ES. Many sizes, great wet handling, CHEAP! I like 'em better than my Dunlop SP 8000 and 9000's. So far seem superior to the RE 730's I ran for a few years. On par w/ the SO-3's...

I run 16 inch wheels, so I can't speak for the larger wheel sizes, but I'm ecstatic about the Dunlop SP8000's I have now. For the (inexpensive) money, they are quiet, and have incredible wet grip. 245/45-16 all around on 8" wheels, and less than $450 out the door.

Kumho Ecsta 712's. I've had them on two 928s. Excellent feel, good grip, moderate road noise. Pretty good in the rain too. Wear has been good (the fronts are lasting longer), and I have no tire life opinion yet. Other than they're seeming to hold out well FWIW. The price was good before, but I'm not sure of availablility for your tire size. Here's the corporate contact:

Jim,

I would have to agree wholeheartedly with Scott. I've been running those Yokos for about 15K (~6 months) and have found them to be slightly better at everything than the Sumitomo HTRZ IIs that I used to run as my 'everyday' shoes.

They ain't Mich Pilot MXXXXXXX999s, or A008rrrrrs but they have worked well so far for me in everything but (duh) snow.

A whole set of 4 17" cost me right at $400. They stick pretty well on a parking lot at speed too.

Inexpensive and functional for a daily driver kinda tire.

I have been running the AVS on my Z for going on a year now. They are great tires, very capable compared to the A-509s I ran before, and they don't wear as fast either. I have a set on order for the shark, and will weigh in after I've scrubbed the skin off and had a chance to play.

Thanks for the great input everyone. This will make my choice much easier, not.
If I read your post right Greg you are putting in 30K/YR ?! Fun!

Bridgestone SO-3s are my current favourite, on 16 and 17 inch wheels

Jim,

Yup, about 30K a year. I do about 350-400 miles a week, around town, and the remainder are 'road trip' miles - why fly when you can drive?

I never cover more than 1300 miles in one day though.

I just haven't found any. Tried Goodyears, Kumho, Dunlop.

They never seem to add up.

Round, and Black. But I could live with another color.

Yokohoma is currently my favorate tire brand. Pertty good tires, even when wet, and a good price too.

Lizard,
I've often wondered about Falken tires....so you like 'em, eh? How much? Sources?

I've heard others claim to have good service/performance from the Sumitomo HTRZ II. If Greg is enjoying 30k miles/year in his Shark....they must be working out pretty well

Scott M,
Where do you source your AVS 100ES?

Thanks for this post Jim...though it doesn't make the selection any easier.

Had an early set of BFG's that were pretty good. Have worked thru Michelin MXX (supurb steering response), MXXX3, and now a set of Pilot Sport - very satisfied (all in 225 & 245/45-16"). Have a set of SO-2's on the S4 in the same sizes - a very capable tire, although noisey: sometimes sounds like a r. wheel bearing is going - they will likely be suceeded with Pilot sports.

I'm currently running BF Goodrich g-Force KDW tires. They're Y rated and
handle very well on the dry/wet road. I used them for Open Road Racing the
last 2 years in the 145 mph avg class, and they have held up well. I've
used Yokohama AVS, Bridgstone RE71, and Kumho Ecsta 712 tires on the
928 before, but so far I like the KDW tires the best.
