Ebay cam gears - a comparison.
So I took the plunge and ordered cam gears from "Los Angeles Auto Parts". Thought it kind of odd that they took the time to CNC these items but the original thread here had positive results on them. At $490 per pair it seemed to good to be true. 16 pairs left!

The are made out of T6 Aluminum and Hard Anodized as it states on the page linked above.
Some comparison pictures:
They look identical to the naked eye (size wise), except for missing the timing mark on the back side, and some cosmetic differences, however I took out the micrometer and took some very unscientific measurements.
This is in mm and is as close as I could get, so there is obviously some degree of variation in measurements but you get the idea...
new old
Outside dia 138.64 138.55 (This was measured between the teeth)
inside dia 128.04 130.39
Thick 32.00 31.10
hub outside 36.12 36.08
hub inside 22.97 22.99
I tried getting the tooth thickness, but it depends on where on the curve you measure and repeating that between the 2 was difficult, but, they appear to be fine to the naked eye for the purpose at hand. I don't have a scale on hand, but they appear to weight about the same.
So hopefully my experience with this is the same as the others who have used these. Overall from my first impressions these appear to be a very well made part.
I'll update this thread once I get everything back together and also after the first re-tension..

The only reason I do not sell them is the lack of the timing mark - the liability is concerning to say the least. Why go to all that trouble to get them made and leave out one of the most important criteria.
Other than that they are excellent quality and a great price.

The LA Auto Parts guys are very near my LA office. I have been there, and met them, and have had dealings with them. Much smaller scale than Mark or Roger, but they seem honest, they know some stuff, and they have some parts. Would not hesitate to deal with them.

I placed both gears together and transferred the marks across. The using a triangular file very, and I do mean very carefully, created the marks. The gears are back on the car but I'll see if I can snap a picture of what I did.
I do agree that it's a shame they left out the huge detail. I did consider mentioning this to them but for some reason I get the feeling this was a one off run. Could be wrong.

I was literally just at LA auto parts and Purchased a single cam drive. I already had a spare single original Porsche replacement. Their faculty seems very nice and well organized and the gear that I purchased seems exceptionally well made. I hope to get it on this weekend

I have bought 928 stuff from them a few times in the past and all transactions were smooth and the parts good.

I've been an LA Auto Parts customer for years. Never had a bad transaction. I used LA Dismantler also, very reputable businesses.

I have almost 20,000 miles on a set of these gears on my 87. No issues, and they still look brand new. I didn't have any issues with the notch not being on the back. I use Ken's VR32 timing tool and can see the front mark as reference.
I did transfer the mark to the back using a white paint pen so I can see it when looking thru port on top of timing cover.
