Maybe I just have dumb luck. But I have been able to read, post and upload pictures on my PC, my iPad (iPad 2 Air) and my smartphones (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc) with not much issue at all since I've been a member. There is one small ad banner up top but other than that I get zero ads and I am not running any ad blockers. Now if I go in without logging in, then it's like an ad pop-up version of a Jackson Pollock painting.
Yep, me too. Once I updated that setting in chrome to not allow pop-ups from a different domain name, all has been fine for me too.

And, just to throw out another data point, there's a huge difference in ads between logging in as a 'user' and not logging in.
I get a couple banner ads at the top & bottom of each thread (or forum thread list) and usually one more between a post that I make and the 'previous last post'.
So, as some of you very observant readers may notice. I am now a member agin. I didn't bother to renew my membership when on all my devices the lazy load "feature" stopped working and I couldn't see any pictures anymore.
In the meantime (today), I found out why. It turns out that if the domain googleapis.com is not reachable, no pictures will load. What this domain has to do with IB is beyond me. But, now that I can see pictures again, I'm happy to pay.
Scratching my head here a little. Safari on the Mac shows *no* ads whatsoever after login to Rennlist. I have never had any trouble with any Rennlist feature. i also use Epic, which is also completely ad free. It is easy to export Apple Photos and upload the file to Rennlist.
Safari on the iPhone is a disaster however. Can't get the next or prior page of a thread from an email notification, or past the first page when you start the website from the URL box.
@Mrmerlin You may know this, but while Apple cloud has many drawbacks but it is very inexpensive - you get 5 GB for free and it's $0.99/month for 50GB. Both sync (sort of) with all your apple devices. On Apple everything works a little differently (someone I know once compared it to a French car), but it will store your pics and distribute them as permanent copies to your iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
googleapis.com is a developer website that holds a bunch of software tools and is used among other things for storing or retrieving to Google Drive. I assume IB is using Google Drive to store pics (and probably ads). From Wikipedia:
I appreciate how this thread has educated me about the history of Rennlist. And those who have been with it since the start. Let's see: I have reason to consult forums for the 928, 911, Macan, Saab, Austin-Healey, F-150, Unimog, Tesla and (recently) Studebaker. This forum is the best, by leaps and bounds. It's got to have saved hundreds of cars from Ignominious Death by Blue Tarp.
A data point: I've had no issues with anything on my various Apple devices. I'm using Ghostery on the laptop I'm using to type this, which is blocking 9 trackers - fewer than the average site. A good blocker should not block the sort of third-party code necessary for basic functionality - I imagine that gets tricky. Choosing a good blocker seems a bit tricky.

You’ve described a form of The Halting Problem.
I will reverse your premise: A good site should not require blocking of cross-site APIs in order for basic functionality to be available.
The third-party APIs are the source of the occasional ‘infections’ that cause ads to pop-up that are un-dismissible (remember the ‘click here to claim your Amazon Rewards’ pop-ups?)
