Default Dash Protectant products

Hi All

I'm on my third 928 and I've always used the Vinylex product as a dash protectant and detailing product.
Having had to replace a badly cracked dash in an 83' I'm obsessive (and compulsive) about putting suncreens in whenever my current 91' is parked outside.

So far-so good with the original vinyl dash in the 1991 with approximately 14 years or ownership

I wonder from time to time about how much of that product I've worked into that dash over the years- and whether I should clean it from time to time before re-applying it,,,but so far it seems to have worked.... or maybe the suncreen and garaged parking has been the key.

Does anybody use anything else?

John

I've always been religious about using the sunscreen, even on cloudy days. I think that's the secret to avoiding dash cracks.

Absolutely spot on. Keep the car out of direct sunlight whenever possible and when not, keep the dash covered- I use one of those silvered sunscreens.

Only a dashboard cover or a windshield shade will keep it from cracking here in Miami. Dash dressings all work, but only a little bit. Heat is the biggest enemy of any dashboard, especially the 928

I also use a sun screen any time it’s outside. But last year I went one step farther and had the car tinted including the windshield with ceramic tint. That stuff really repels the heat and UV.

I think the dash cover has been out of my car for a total of less than 4 hours since I became the care steward in 1997. It gets washed and returned to service ASAP. The car gets the windscreen sunshade whenever it's parked, even when it's in the garage with the car cover on it. If it's outside for any length of time, the reflective window shields go in all the windows (thanks Nicole!).

There are more than a few "plastic protectant" products flooding the market. After watching the original Armor-All decimate dashboards in the middle of the last century, I've been pretty gunshy about putting chemical preservatives on car plastic. There's nothing that can seriously soak in to vinyl to restore lost solvents, so we find ourselves looking for the IR and UV blocking methods, and limit the heat in the car that causes the solvents to flash off. The closest I come to vinyl coating is a diluted 303 Aero Preservative, mostly for appearance on exposed vinyl surfaces. Since the dash isn't exposed, it doesn't get any.

I really need to get that ceramic tint applied to the windows. It does a great job of protecting the interior and helping it stay cool. Plus blocking the UV helps with photo epoxidation of light-exposed plastic bits.

I drive the car and park the car. When the dash tears up I'll send it back to Rob Budd again.

Hmm. Gear lever has all butt disappeared.

Can you check the left side connection to the instrument cluster while you're down there, dear?

Those knees are going to stretch the leather on the seats and leave irreparable stretch dents - how could she be so crass?
