I've got a line on a good friends relatively well maintained, but sadly wrecked 88 S4. Knowing I'm looking for some power, he's offered me first crack at the engine/driveline.
Here's the question I have:
Has anyone swapped a later model engine of the 32v variety into an early model car? What can I expect to run into? What MIGHT I run into?
Second question regarding the clutch. I've got an 81 5-speed that is looking to get rebuilt. I'd like to keep it and the doouble disk clutch setup if possible. Can I throw an 88 (auto) engine into my car and simply swap flywheels out? I'd like to get away without resorting to the DEVEK double disk kit if possible.
Any suggestions or constructive advice is helpful.

Do some searching the forum on this topic. By all accounts, the upgrade of the engine is a big job, entailing everything from fuel system to wiring harness modifications in an earlier car. The clutch is doable but a moot point until you commit to the major obstacles first.

Old/New,
Contact Jim at Akkurat. I beleive he has some experience swapping a GTS motor into an 82 or 83 EuroS. Not sure he'd take it on again, but can't hurt to ask. Here's his website.

Why not just move everything...Tank, fuel lines, Engine, Tranny, Tube, Even Suspensions and Breaks if it will fit. And you could almost do it as one big piece. I've thought about doing that on my cab. I dont think the unibodies are that different.

Karl
That's kinda what I was thinking. The damage is to the front right fender (front suspension is shot), but the engine is fines and there's no apparent problems with the supporting amenities. HOw hard would it be to do a one for one swap of like parts?

You can remove the flywheel pick up ring from the 1988 AT flywheel and put it on your old double disc flywheel. You will have some minor fabrication to do as well as indexing the ring in the proper location.

My mechanic here in SD did this with a former SoCal 928 guy. 88 to an 83. Wiring was a bitch he said, but everything else was straight forward.

Airflite, I don't want to post the pics I have of my own car, since the pics I have show droopy headlights and phonedials, and dirt. Once I get it all cleaned up & put together and the wheels put on it I'll put it in my avatar for sure. ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
