My 90 GT was advertised as an S4 and as I walked up to it I ran my fingers under the wheel wells to confirm the rolled lip, checked for the stick, popped the hood to check the engine number, put it up on the lift to confirm the tranny number took it for a test drive and slapped down the cash.
I doubt that my deal was as good ($14k) but that was way back in 2002.
I can't begin to thank you guys enough for helping get that 89 started and sent off. Arrived on Friday.
God likes 928's too and dropped one in your lap. Gotta love it!!
NEVER,
EVER, use DOOR TO DOOR shipping.
They would not deliver to the house. Great roads, no reasonable reason. They actually called me and asked if I would meet them about 90 minutes away. Had to drive the basket case about 2 miles. Scared ****less...
We made.
The shipping story is long and stressful for me to recant..My advice is to go the extra couple hundred and deal with a shipper directly. Not a broker..

Now the fun begins..
Glad you're all in one piece. My advice next time is to grab a cheap flight, and drive it back. We coulda got you some dampers, and set it up to drive. Plenty of helpers between TX and MD to keep you going. My road trip with the 85 stick from Marthas Vineyard to Fort Worth was epic. Wheel bearing howling, no right hatch glass, hardly any brakes. Legen--dary.
Update - dateline Jan 14, Arlington TX. A scuffy drive-way, under a few mulberry trees. Three beer-gut rednecks and one gurl stand around a black sports car. They ponder; "Chebby V8 swap for that German Camaro?" "Boy-howdy, that'll make 'er git down the road."
Now for some reality. We cleaned up the fuel system, new pump, strainer, and hose. Didn't do the filter yet in case there's some lingering crud to catch. Flush the cooling system and fill. Check oil, and timing belt look fine. She fires up on a few revs, and settles into a high idle with a few burbles. Couple of the lifters haven't expanded yet and clatter, but over all sounds good. Good oil pressure, charging system shows well. One warning for low brake fluid. That's going to be exchanged anyway, so no sense filling it now. We're not going anywhere soon. Shut down and take a look at the clutch. It was going straight to the floor when we picked it up. Remove the slave, and work it in and out a few times. Test the pedal, and the shaft moves! Put the slave back in, align it with the fork bucket and we have a clutch. Outstanding. One less thing to rebuild. Inspect the belts, and lower engine, all looks ok but has some spider nests, and mud dauber nests. Won't slow us down. Fire it up again, and test the seats, windows, wipers, horn, int lights. Some work, some don't. Marker lights come on, but not the headlamps, maybe relay. No horn, but most of the seats move. Heater and blower work, but AC not. Haha, what a shock. Left cooling fan comes on when 195F reached, but right cooling fan is nogo. Overall, we have a running, driving, shifting, stopping car. Still some ancillary systems to sort out, but it revs nice. Needs driving.
Jobs left; Headlights, pax window, int lights, horn, AC, some vac leaks, drive seat fore-aft, mirror adj, seat memory, driver seat upholstery, carpet, dash/pod cracks. For typical mx catch-up will likely be TB/WP job, MM rack boot job, intake refresh job. I recommend paint, but Curry thinks it can be saved. Not to my eyes, but we'll see. So far, we are all satisfied, it's a goer.
