79 Resto......Original or Mod??
Hi All,
Just wondering what the consensus is regarding a resto I'm doing on the 79. I have another thread going about it but wanted to know should I keep it as close to original as possible, or mods. Bigger brakes, S suspension warmed over motor etc. Given it would be a bit of a rare car, non sunroof 79 RHD Manual in Minerva with black and blue Pascha. It only has just over 60,000 miles on it. I'm thinking it may pay just to leave well enough alone. I will however paint and detail everything.
The other thing I was wondering, is a totally original car with the same mileage that has never had anything done except perhaps belt, pump etc, but still rides on original bushes etc, worth more or less than a car that has been completely rebuilt using all new parts? Like what I'm doing now. New CV's and boots, new parking shoes, new wheel bearings, bushes etc.
Thoughts appreciated.
Cheers
Scott

I see some of the pics now. Great color and Euro with pasha. Thou shall not covet....thou shall not covet....still coveting. Nice car! Still would love to see the interior. Maybe there is another post I can search for and see it.
Back to the originality question. I guess if you keep all the original parts it would be able to go back to original? and with the man hole wheels you wouldn't be able to see the upgraded brakes and would retain original look.
I think most of us prefer performance, but like the idea of originality. It is always a battle in my mind.

IMHO putting better brakes on is a great idea for any early 928,
if its one thing they could have done better it would have been brakes.
Once the engine is running good,
better brakes will inspire more gas being used

Modify.
Keep the original pieces, just in case the value stock goes crazy.
Keep the engine looking stock and get your power from increased displacement/efficiency....no one can detect that...nor want to change it back.

In the 80s and 90s it was all the rage to "Update" early 911s to short hoods , turbo flairs , slant nose , make a convertible out of a Targa now those made up cars are worth but a small fraction of what a stock original early 911 is worth.

My take on it is to leave the car original. It should be easy enough to find a later car in worse condition that you can go to town on.
But, yeah, in the end it's your car.

preserve the looks improve the performance, useablity, reliability, etc. In addition to mods to motor and brakes, consider alternators, starters, led bulbs, modern sound deadening, steel ball joints. Tranny rebuilds too. There are plenty of upgrades that are essentially invisible but will give you driving pleasure.

I have two kinds of 928s: those that can reasonably be returned to pristine condition and those that cannot. My GTS was pretty pristine, so I went mostly that direction with it. A few updates, but nothing major or visible. My '79 had someone cut the top off with a sawsall, so the gloves are well and truly off. I have modded motor, brakes, suspension, body, interior, exhaust, etc. Some of the mods I'm not wild about and may back out. I'm not sure what I am gonna do with the S4. Its stock now, but mostly because the performance is pretty good. I did wack the wing, and I would like to change the color of the interior. The doors are too long for Honolulu parking spaces. Lambo doors? The car is too hot inside for Honolulou. Move the radiator to the back? Probably neither of those things...
Looking at your car, it looks pretty sweet, and like a car that might be interesting for being a clean original condition example. I would probably put S brakes, and stop there. Its a simple mod that uses all factory parts. Also, there aren't a lots of other easy mods to early cars that improve performance much without big costs or major downsides. You could put headers, but they will be noisy. You could supercharge, but I would not without doing head gaskets, and its kind of a lot of $.

In your other thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-the-79-a.html appears your deep cleaning/restoring this car to it's original glory and that a good thing. Maybe swap in a set of 16" phone dials to complete the OB vibe ? Would love to see some interior and engine bay pics T

Hi Tony,
Yeh, I think I'm going to go along the factory fresh look route. I'm getting around to removing the engine and trim so I can put the car on rotisserie and paint the underneath, strip the engine bay and repaint etc. I will however update the interior and exterior lighting.
