I took all morning to clean the working area... I did take a break by putting together the sway bar links !

Then I put the dashboard back in ! I check the systems, and everything works Well... everything that remains...

Now I have a LOT of room to put some stuff underneath the dash !

Tomorrow I tackle the exhaust repair... we'll see how that goes :/

OK, i haven't posted all the steps between the last post and this one...
You've missed a LOT but I'll update everything

BUT... the most important thing happened !

Woohoooo

The engine started !
It started right up, idled smoothly, everything seems fine.
I need to finish the cooling system before playing with it further !

I can't wait to finally take it back on the road !

Exhaust is back on !
Well... temporary exhaust...

Oh oh, what's that ?

This weekend I continued the radiator support :

I just have to move it forward si it doesn't touches the alternator tensionner bolt.

Then I finished the cooling system... Way too many clamps for my liking... but since I can't weld aluminum yet it will have to do !
Once filled, I ran the engine until up to temp

I managed to tune some of the low load cells on the map.

Found a water leak and two oil leaks...
The water leak is fixed, but for the oil... I don't know what to do yet :/

I need to work on the accelerator cable...

I hate that bumper !

Thanks !

By the way... the rear bumper is IN !!
What a PAIN !

I replaced some connectors with brand new ones.

Then moved on to the bumper.

After a few minutes of massaging it with a hammer...

A bit more !

Test fit without tailights :

Boom

It's not perfect but it'll work for me

I wanted to fit the electric fans yesterday... then realised I didn't have the mounts...

It's almost time to put it back on the road !

Accelerator cable bracket !

The simplest solution is the best one !

Now it's time to have a little fun !

5000rpm rev limiter.

Clutch doesn't work anymore... probably stuck on the flywheel...

OK !
So, clutch was just stuck
The car idles fine now ! I had forgot to activate the idle control on the ECU...

I received a little something !

An accelerometer
The MaxxECU is able to use it.
I plan to use it as a quick and cheap way to tune the timing before going to the dyno to fine tune it. It should save me time ! And if it doesn't... well I just lost 8€ ^^

I received my new steering wheel Monday !

I made the upper radiator support Tuesday ! It's 4mm thick, should be enough to hold the radiator and provide mounting point for the future intake !

I printed a center cap for the steering wheel ! I love it !

I started welding the second seat support. I did a better job than for the first one...

Today I also did something I wanted to do for a while !
I called Raymond Boutinaud himself to ask him if I could come visit and take a look at the famous 928 !

Right now it's running a modified 5.5L 32V engine, making 410hp ! But he wants to race at Le Mans Classic, so he needs a 4.7L M21/11 because the car has to be exactly how it was !
It's dry sumped, with the tank in the batterie tray.
Electric power steering pump (the same I have) hidden in place of the fusebox. As the car has no pop-up headlight, he's running a very simplified chassis wiring harness with a new fuse box.
Rollcage is the exact replica of the aluminum one he had in 83. I like how simple it is !

He had 16" wheels in 83, but given the unavailability of 16" slick tires in the correct size, he's now running 18" wheels. I'd say around -2.5° of camber up front (didn't ask...). Rear tires are 270.

I spent nearly three hours there, and made a friend ! We share the same philosophy of "I'll just make one" when working on cars !

He also has a lot of other cool stuff like this Cayman !

I'll give hime one of my shifters for his 996 GT3 !

That's it for today !

Ben

I made a box for the accelerometer !

And a twin relay/fuse holder

I finished the first seat mount !

Since the seat sits in between the rails, I couldn't use the rail locking system on the inside, so I made one that works on the outside !

Installed :

Feels good to see it on its wheels !

Got some V band for the exhaust, cheaper that finding 58mm clamps...

I printed a new glove box latch, I couldn't fing the old one...

OK, don't slam the glove box door though ^^

Since the silicone hoses wouldn't stay in place on the engine, I had to improvise something quickly...

I machined the thermostat's neck down, and bolted down a piece of tubing, with a flare. JB welded the tube on the neck to seal it. It's going nowhere, until I can make something better.

I drove the Jag for a bit yesterday !

It's by no mean a sports car, but I LOVE how the 4.0 supercharged feels ! I actually like it more than the Coyote in my Mother's 11 Mustang.
The supercharger's whine, and the instant torque from 2000 to 6000rpm is really nice !

One day the 928 will receive supercharger... I have to !

I found an engine for the 928 by the way ! A M28/21 (4.7 S 310hp) !
It's not cheap, but I want a second engine to redo and swap.

Last news... I'm quitting Porsche ! Tired of their way of working...
I'll be focusing on my website and the parts I make !

Ben, I've studied your excellent photos very carefully but I can't see what you have done about the remote oil filler and crankcase ventilation system. I presume you put a plate in under the original crankcase vent. I have a similar but cheaper set up using a GM throttle body and have relocated the remote oil filler down the front next to the oil reservoir for the power steering. I welded up a 3 layer plate to stop the oil being thrown up the crankcase cover and this works fine but it has resulted in too much crankcase pressure in the cam covers. I have just started road tuning my Microsquirt ECU and have to have the front bungs in the cam covers loosened slightly to stop oil leaking from the gasket. I will make a vent system to send the vented fumes to the catch can/recycle line.

I haven't work on the crankcase ventilation system yet !
But what you're saying is interesting, I know the M28 is a bit lacking in terms of proper crank ventilation, what plug are you loosening ?
I get drips of oil from the cam cover when I run it for a long time.
The crankcase fumes aren't sucked in the intake on my car, so there is no positive crankcase ventilation... Might be why it leaks !

How is your car running ?

I have just started road tuning using the Tunerstudio autoanalyze function and apart from a problem with the Ford VR sensor cap sliding off, it is going well. Still have to refine the GM IAC stepper motor settings at startup.

On both sides of the cam cover I have loosened off the second inspection covers, those allen key screw in bits that give you access to the hold-down bolts underneath. The thread is 18mm 1.5 and I have ordered a couple of tails with that thread to take 8mm hose. The plan is to take the hose from both sides into the pipe that takes the fumes from the crankcase cover to the oil filler/oil catch can. I welded a pipe fitting on the bottom of the old oil filler that just takes the oil back down to the pan like the stock set up. At the moment the blow-by just escapes out the lid of the oil filler. I have a piece of aluminium tube inside the oil filler to separate the oil but there has been very little. Only a small amount of blowby as well but I suspect there is still a bit of pressure in the valve covers.

Good to know !
I'll order some fittings !

I need to start making carbon fiber parts, I think a proper catch can will be one of them !

Today was a big day !

I re-did the original ring that I had lost...

I rigged an electrical brake assist... not my best idea !

I quickly set the ride height...

And after fighting with the unassisted power steering for a good 10minutes, I managed to get the car out !

I went on a very short drive then washed it !

How was it ?

AWFUL !
No power steering with a big V8 on the front wheel is stupid, manually switched brake assist is also stupid, I had set the shocks to the softest position, which equals to no damping at all, completely open shocks !
Aaaand it's way too loud ^^

But it's fine, it'll get better and better now

My exhaust is a straight-through 3" system. I had to add another small straight through muffler at the rear to regain low down torque.
