Default Bad Altenator?

My dash readout never reads above 12v and then stops registering at all while driving. Sometimes it will pop back up to 12v but never more. Today when cranking, I got a warning that showed the battery (can’t remember the wording), but it fired right up. The battery was purchased in Jun. Does Autozone check altenator while it’s on the car?

Gauge is generally useless but just use it as a guide.
Measure the voltage at the jump post to ground. That will tell you what is really going on. Should read about 13.5 v at idle with nothing substantial turned on electrical wise.
Is the cooling duct in place and OK. Hot alternators produce less voltage.

Have you checked the condition of your engine wiring harness [and for that matter the earth straps]?

Engine strap & ground straps are new. Just a note, it wasn’t reading at all when I got it from the PO. New harness and it began to register “sporadically”. Roger, thank you publically for all of your help & counsel (keeping me from spending $).

Im no good with electrical. So I crank the car and without any additional load and measure the voltage at the jump post. I have a multi meter now just have to figure out which setting to put it on. LOL

Is there a jump post under the hood or am I checking at the battery?

Right at the 14 pin connector is the jump post, passenger front of the engine bay.

Measure with the car running, not the starter cranking.

Car idling and reading 13.86. Cooling duct connected correctly. Just crazy behavior of my dash reading I guess.

Yep. Great readings. Problem is going to be the circuit foil on the back of the cluster.

I looked at your volt meter and went cross eyed. Been a while since I've looked at one with so many options. Catch me next year and we can goof around with yours and mine.

You can't pay someone to love these cars.

It's an affliction.

And for both Sean & Roger, well educated customers are far better to work with.
The bit of effort put in to educating folks pays itself back 10 fold (or better) in reduced headaches & frustration.
