Default Looking For Locking Gas Cap

Somehow I lost my gas cap that was matched to my ignition key.

I don't think I drove away with it sitting on the spoiler after gassing up as I would have seen the access door open in my side view mirror.

That means someone stole it, probably while parked at work, although I always lock it when done fueling so not sure how that could happen either.

So once I get a gas cap I have to figure out how to get the lock matched to my key.

buy a used cap and rekey it ,
take the top half off ,
then the lock cylinder comes apart.
Jerry Feather makes a tool to take the caps apart

RV - re-keying the lock is not too difficult - you'll have to experiment with the wafers (I believe that's the same mechanism here) to re-key. I've done it on other locks, and if I can do it, Mr. Potato head/anyone can do it.

Randy, one of the things I have found in the hand full of 928 gas caps that I have taken apart with my tool is that even though the lock tumbler has places for, I think, 5 or 6 pins, the caps never have more than two pins in them. I suspect that the pins can be moved around in such a way that the two in the cap will find places that will work with any 928 key. Given that, and the fact that I have a spare late model cap, I'll take it apart, replace the broken Pawl with one of mine and send it to you un-assembled so you can move the pins around to match your key and then put the cap back together yourself, for which you do not need my tools. I'll do that for you for $100 shipped. If you wish to send me your key I'll do the same but I'll try to re-key it, put it back together and ship it to you. For that it will be $120. ("try," because I haven't yet moved the pins around to re-key one, although I think I have a set of 928 lock pins around here somewhere if the two in the cap cannot be made to match your key.

Randy:

I've got several of them. I can have Mary send you one Monday.....that will solve the immediate problem. When your extra key comes in, you can send it to me, I'll rekey one of the other caps to fit your key...and we can just swap caps in the mail.

Pretty simple?

Right on GB, you're the best!

I'll see how long it takes to get that spare key. Maybe easiest to send you the key to match the cap in one fell swoop. I'm ok for now, using some heavy aluminum foil as a temporary cap seal. I'm still a few months away from my next smog test, so will definitely need to get that done before then. Perhaps hold a cap aside for me until we can work out the details.

Thanks again - I'll be in touch!

My spare tumbler has 5 slots, but only 2 are occupied - the end 2, deepest. I have previously rekeyed my current cap without too much trouble, apart from getting the cover off - 4 dextrous hands are essential. Making the ignition key fit is well worth effort. Had to replace the original cap when its key disappeared while the car was in the hands of the shipping agents. I have not found it hard to get keys copied here in Oz.

Randy, that is a great offer from GB. However, you may need a new pawl in any case. Even if you don't "need" one, you need one. I will send you one to have him put into the cap for you when he rekeys it. That's $25 mailed.

That's a great idea! Those pawls frequently break.

If someone has one that is looking for a home (cheap) I'm in the market as well.
I'm even interested if it's just the threaded guts, without the lock shell, as mine is completely missing...
