Update:

The long key does not go all the way into the lock in the short cap.

Jeff, I have your cap repaired and will put it in the mail today. I did not find anything wrong with it except the broken pawl. See the picture. Unfortunately this replacement pawl is an original, so it too is prone to breaking.

Greg gave me a very nice 'short' gas cap that works fine. I'm not gonna worry about making a matched key locking cap at this point, possibly to lose another one due to brain fade.
