Wheels Question
hey smart 928 people- is it heresy to put phone dials on an 85 or 86.5 car? I’m just not that much into the manhole covers and have always really liked PDs. How do the sizes compare and would I be taking a hit on the width for 16-inch wheels?

As I am aware there is no 16 inch phone dial with the requisite offset for the 928 front wheel or so the data base for Porsche wheels that I use refers. There are 16 inch phone dials with incorrect offsets available, the best one being a 9 inch rim with ET57 but still short of the offset mark.
Any 16 inch wheel will clear the top of the caliper of the pre GTS models but one has to be careful with any wheel fitment with the correct 928 front offset to ensure the spokes do not clout the side of the caliper. The phone dials originally intended for the 928 [15 inch] may well not clear the calipers. I think Eric showed a picture the other day of an some later model fitted with phone dials but which variant of the wheel that was I have no idea

An update on the wheels, I got a set of front wheels from Petza914 (thanks for reaching out), they're a bit rough but I decided to try and fix them up myself:
This was the worse of the two, some curb rash and damage to each of the phone dial holes as well as some pin holes and scratches to the main surface (no surprise, I saw the photos before buying them).
I'm going to do my best with what I have here, luckily the second one is in pretty good shape and didn't have any curb rash or noticeable damage to the phone dial holes, just some pin holes and scratches which I can take care of later
I got to work with some 320 grit sandpaper and some elbow grease
This was taken after I was about half way through sanding
There's very little I can do about these gouges, I know I could use bondo but I think I'll just tidy them up as much as I can for now and see what they look like painted
No more curb rash! (there were actually 3 places with curb rash on this rim), when I tried to clean off the dust with brake clean, the paint just melted off as I guess these were rattle-can painted in the past, I was going to strip the paint off anyway so I applied some paint stripper and got them down to bare metal:
After a lot more sanding and cleaning, I applied a few coats of high build primer, and this is as far as I've gotten so far, the nicks and gouges that I couldn't get out are very noticeable but I think that once I've sprayed on the paint and clear, they'll be less noticeable. More updates as I progress!

I say this as a non-owner/ lurker...
Phone dials might be the sexiest wheels ever, so you have my permission.
Cheers

Cool pics. I remove my Phone Dials from my 87 944S, PMB them, epoxy primed them, and applied some high build primer on the surface/face of the wheels, and they ready for the final epoxy primer coating/sealer before painting them. Right now, waiting for the pics to upload and will share.
I think these Phone Dials are in this...

Aaron - look at this:
Then squint, and see this:
I always loved the phone dial wheels, but I think the Cup 1's were an evolution of them. The Cup 1 is my personal favorite wheel design. The beauty of the Cup 1 is that they are 17" wheels, which I think are the perfect size for our cars (18" is too big, IMHO). Also, you get many more tire options, including much wider tire options, with the 17" wheels.
Original Cup 1's are expensive. Mille Miglia makes an excellent and true reproduction (I think Porsche actually sources their factory Cup !'s from them?). I have them on my red 85 now, and had them on my prior garnet red 85 a few years ago. Just another thought.
