Default Previous owner mess/fix, front fan w/relay, what is this for??

(1986 928 S3)

The beautiful work of some previous owner. I have no idea why it was done, and not enough knowledge to see what it is for or why. Can anyone try to figure out what is going on here?

So there is a hot wire with a 50A fuse going from hot post to the relay, along with a wire spliced from the wire going down to the AC compressor area, also going to the relay.
Red wire coming from fan - into relay.
Ground - into relay.

What does this do? Can I just remove all of it? What will be the consecquences? I guess it was done once upon a time, for a reason..

Your model year relies on a mechanically driven fan with a viscous coupling for regular cooling. As designed by the factory it also has an auxiliary fan to help with air flow deficit when stuck in traffic and the motor is idling.

The wiring seen on your photos is clearly a "DIY concoction" of some kind and this may suggest that the fan currently fitted is not the stock auxiliary fan which I must say looks suspiciously large for such a unit but then I am not too familiar with your model year so I may be wrong in this regard . It is also fused at 50 amps whereas the stock auxiliary fan is fused at 25 amps or so I understand [fuse 29?].

The obvious question is to ask whether the mechanical fan [driven off the crankshaft] is still present? This is not entirely clear to me based on your photos. Doubtless the more knowledgeable will chime in when they wake up.

Thanks fred,

mechanical belt-driven fan behind radiator is present yes (though not in the photo cause I'm in the middle of TB change), and the viscous fan coupling seems to be working fine. I also believe the fan behind the metal grid in front is stock and original.

Looks like they were forcing the Aux Fan to run whenever the AC was on.

I'd remove it all (especially the 50 AMP fuse OMG), and replace with 25 as FredR suggested.
If you want the Fan to run whenever the AC is on, it can be done much cleaner than that.

Remove that mess. Hook it up as it was originally. Test the auxiliary fan circuit and repair as necessary.

A friend did that with his '83. It never worked right and I eventually removed all the crap for him and sent him home with belt and mechanical fan. He hated it as it reduced his overall h.p. by too much ! ! His biggest problem was that he ran his car without the T.stat (it's not a chebby people)

Yep looks that way to me too. I'll just remove the whole mess, easy enough. And then see if the fan works as it should (how is is supposed to work? When would it normally start? Is is controlled only by AC stuff or is it also water temp controlled?).
