Despite the fact that I think it is always a good job to follow Greg's advice, I do not always do so, because sometimes the costs just don't make sense to me. He is trying to make his work as close to perfection as he can and he has a hell of a reputation to protect. Whereas my cars are worth nothing to anyone but me so whatever money I put in is just gone. As I recall, bearings are a little expensive, as are rings. What are cheap, though, are rod nuts, and sealant. So, without too much additional time and hardly any money you can at least inspect the main and rod bearings.

Thanks again guys for the input. I've added some pics here and really want to tackle this block myself. I know that I can do it. I will need to buy some tools. I have not owned micrometers in years. I would like to do this and document it for my own knowledge. Plastigauge is awesome, and i will likely use it as well but i want more piece of mind and enjoy the time with my block while it's on a stand.

Can you guys recommend mic's and sizes that you use? Starrett? That's all I've ever used and seem like fine quality for this build.

Besides the small cracking in the bores and the camshaft that Greg mentioned is junk this block is super clean inside. I pulled the pan and it is stellar. Zero metal in the pan itself. I posted a pic a while back with the magnet having a small sliver on it that was concerning, not normal to me.

Mains - I won't even consider this until I do the reading, research and consider myself ready.
Rod Bearings - not trivial and I would like to do only these without the mains, the block being spotless inside makes me just want to do the rod bearings only
Crankshaft - I am at a loss here. I dont know where to send it. I have a very local personal friend that runs the Porsche factory team, think Rolex and Daytona, but not specific to 928's and I dont think he would be set up to cross drill a 928 crank.
Heads - They need gone through and I need to see where to send them. Greg? I want them done right. Would depend on shipping and if you have the time/are willing?
Water Pump - worth noting as it is absolutely destroyed - so lucky I got the car the 15 miles to the garage - TB so loose I could easily pull it off the cam gear, Water pump destroyed and the bearing down by the crank gear near frozen
Piston Rings - I have to figure out how to install these correctly. All my research into this has me a bit worried as to if I can do it correctly.
Bearings - What are the bearings of choice nowadays? Glyco? I saw there were some bad batches at some point.
