928 What causes window rattle ?
My windows operate perfectly except for a rattle when going over bumpy road surfaces. Any ideas on which parts might need replacing. I have already replaced upper and lower scraper seals. Would appreciate suggestions.

There is a metal pole that has two plastic (nylon)? Guides that travel up and down it when the window moves.
these guides wear over time and often cause rattling. Permanent fix for 30 years more is to replace them.
quick temporary fix is to use a couple of zip ties to fill the gap created from the wear.
Must pull door door panel to access and for either fix.

12, 13, 20, 24.
All are time/wear items other than #24, but once in there, its easy to replace because it -can- contribute.

I did the zip tie fix for the time being. I didn’t take any pics of that, unfortunately.
remove door panel. Chrome pole is easy to see right there. When you raise and lower the window you’ll see the guides traveling up and down.
i just wrapped the zip tie around the guide so the clasp was on the outside. The narrow part of the zip tie fills the space where the guide is worn away.
If if I am thinking right, pulling that pole to actually replace the guide requires removal of the glass and maybe the regulator. I have not tried that yet.

I don't know of any others.
You can unbolt the guides from the window, then remove the guide tube.
It's actually more complicated to remove the door panel than to do the window guides. At least, I found it so.
Thread with very comprehensive & detailed instructions (guess who):

Check the 12 and 13 items (nylon guides that run on the tube) at purchase time - they are handed for Left and Right. I have a pair here that are identical, but one has a RH part no, the other has a LH part no MOULDED (molded?) in the nylon. Its mainly the upper guide that wears - apply a little lubrication when fitting. The link in post #6 is a useful complement to this thread IMHO. The WSM is quite good on this, especially final alignment.

Just a data point, if your window is only partially open, it’s going to rattle.

Mine dont...everything in there is new.
Doesnt mean they dont move a slight bit, but they are soundless.
Dont lube the nylon sliders. Lube attracts dirt, that quickly eats the nylon.
The bar is meant to simply let it slide up and down dry..with its own tension spring built in.

Just as a note, has anyone used Archive.org to look at the Portia site?
I am new to the 928 scene, and hadn't heard of Dan and his site, but a bit of digging turned up the site address, and the Internet Archive Way Back Machine did the rest.

Mine used to rattle when partially open. I replaced those guides and it tightened everything up nicely. Order some extra black and white door panel snaps. At least a couple will break with you pop off the old door panel. I think Rob Budd sells them in packs of 10. They are cheap. It's really not a bad job.

You'll also want to replace the vapor barrier most likely. The clear shower curtain method is most common, although there are other techniques if you search.
Most guys just "eyeball it into place and cut to fit. If you want to be factory precise, here is a template:

It can be a bit of a rabbit hole because there is no end to the list of "while your at it" stuff you can address. When I was doing my guides I also replaced the upper rubber window trim and lower outer rubber trim. Its amazing at how much quieter the car rides. My old seals were pretty tattered.
Good luck.
