Default Engine for sale soon, but first.

Earlier in the year, I bought a spare S4 engine, 87 model, Euro car, if that matters. Previous owner bought it when they were in the armed forces in Europe to build a turbo motor, crated it up and had it shipped home to Texas and there it sat for 10 years. He bought it from a guy named Simon Watson. According to Simon, the engine had a top end rebuild of some sort, heads x-rayed, pressure tested, and skimmed to clean up, new valve guides, stems seals, lifters, honed bores lightly for 10 secs, etc. Engine was then used for about 40k miles before being pulled after the car was crashed. The previous owner had the engine sent to Loe Banks Porsche Specialists to do some work, where they started to swap out cams, so they removed the timing belt, cam gears, etc. Work was stopped and the engine was shipped to Texas to finish. When I received the engine, it had no cam gears or timing belt, so I'm a little unsure of its condition. I'd like to sell it, but I want to make sure it's good to go. I borrowed cam timing tools from Hans and bought new cam gears, rollers, belt, etc. If any of you were a prospective buyer of the engine, would you feel more comfortable with the engine if I just timed the cams and put it all back together, or if I pulled the heads and inspected pistons, cylinders, valves, etc? I would assume, since it's been sitting so long, the purchaser would like to refresh the seals and gaskets, water pump, tensioner rebuild, etc, probably headgaskets, too.

Yup. I would think that selling a not-run-for-a-decade engine would be easier if there are pictures of the business side of the heads and the cylinder walls.

I removed the intake, oil filler neck, water bridge, and heads this past weekends for inspection and pictures. Everything looks good. Valves need to be cleaned up a bit, deposits on them.

Obviously, whoever purchases the engine will need to furnish new head gaskets, intake gaskets, seals, etc (whatever an intake refresh would require), new knock sensors would be advisable, hall sensor while it's all apart, fuel lines, fuel dampners/regulator, oil pan gasket, tensioner rebuild, water pump, etc. Pretty much a complete refresh on the soft bits. I will include everything else I bought for it, cam cover gaskets, the cam pins that replace the hockey pucks, tensioner pads, cam gears, timing belt, belt rollers. Also includes complete engine wiring harness and plug wires.

So, now to figure out an asking price. Suggestions on where to look for comps?

Need to remove the head gaskets to see any pitting, that is where it show if any welding is required.

That’s a thoughy. Without a warranty or guarantee that it’ll work, you’re working with an unknown despite history and a story (there’s always a story). I think asking price is probably best around 1/3 to 1/2 of what Int’l charges, unless there’s something uber rare about it like being a squirter block. I think that puts you in the $750 to $1,000 range. Maybe more, maybe less. If I was in the market, based on photos, I’d offer between $500 and $750, mostly because heads will need work for sure. I’m not in the market, however.

Remember 928 Intl. also sells these at 1/2 off at Christmas time with warranty. Something to consider.

That's a start, I guess. Though, the NIB cam gears, timing belt, rollers etc cost me $700.

I would sell them separately, if possible. Some people, like me, hoard parts for engine rebuilds, and may not have use for those pieces. You might be able to get a little premium for the engine with those parts from the "right" buyer, but I guarantee you won't get the value of the engine plus the $700 you put into it.

There may be a sub-population our there that would pay a premium for a "turn-key" engine that is 100% drop-in ready. But it sounds like you're not willing to go there. It would require at least another $1k+ and time to get that engine to that level.

Just my $0.02. Not trying to knock you down.
