Hi. My name is Seth, and I am a simpleton. I drive a car that is a 'pretender' to a crown I don't want to wear and throne to which I don't want to sit. I drive a 928 because of what it means to ME, not because of what it represents to the world.

No one so far has mentioned that what Porsche wanted for the 928 flew in the face of what Porsche buyers wanted. It was the buying public that destined the 928 to the dust bin, not Porsche. I consider that the company gave the 928 all the market support possible. If I were a fly on the wall in 1977 at Porsche the only thing I would do different for the model debut would be to roll out a works version for the race circuit, or homologate a '928RS' or a '928GT2' for the group who would take the 928 where the 911 went with the full support of the 911. And - before you tell me 'BUT THE 928 IS NOT A RACE CAR!', just imagine what could have been had Porsche decided in 1978 to homologate a 928 for competition. Think of the history of the 930, and apply that same level of interest to the 928.

Not sure it would have swayed the Amer GT buyer in the late 70s, but it surely would have made a difference in Europe - where the 928 was pooh-poohed as the pretender far more than US. Porsche went 'all in' on the 928 from 1980 onward. Advances in performance, luxury, appointments, options, etc. Everything they needed - except a race pedigree. Lets face it, the race pedigree was present in every aspect of the 911 since the first roll out. We might all be looking for the dead 911s today but for the lack of race support on the 928.

YMMV, objects in mirror, contents have settled, and may cause **** leakage.

I hope you do write this and publish it somewhere. I tell this same thing to people I meet that ask about the car and are only peripherally familiar with them.
