Any reservations on 1984 928S Auto?
Hi there, I'm very interested in purchasing an 80K mile, one owner 1984 928S Auto. It's been well cared for and garaged. Are there any reservations or gotchas for that year that I should be aware of? I'm aware of the usual powerplant concerns and expensive maintenance needs - just curious if anyone has owned that year and if there was any issues. Thank you! Tim.

No worries usually for the thrust bearing failure due to the original robust design before Porsche's revisions in later cars.
'84 already has 4 spd auto, so better.
Not any particular issues with the S-cars auto.
Of course, you already know about the electrical, wp/tb, items for ALL 928s.
Good luck!

My first was an '84 and loved it. My only advice, if possible verify the odometer if you care about mileage. It's easy for the plastic odometer gear to break and people are in no hurry to have them fixed.

The wiring diagrams in the WSM for the 1984 model show no wire colors. None. Not one single wire color. So if you need a wire color for a particular circuit, you have to pick between the 83 wiring diagrams and the 85 diagrams.

Mine is an '84 auto that I bought with about 63K miles on it. The '84, as mentioned by everyone above, is the best of all 18 years made and really nobody even argues about that. OK, I joke (sorta), but the '84 does represent the pinnacle of the 4.7L engined cars as offered in the US. The euro version continued on through '86 and would be the one to get since it produces around 310 HP vs the US spec 234 HP. But even at 234, the car has no problem keeping up and passing modern traffic, especially on the highways where it really is at home. In addition to the items that Hoi mentioned, be sure to replace all the rubber fuel and power steering lines if they haven't already been replaced.

Same here, 84 Auto was also my first 928...and my last Auto. :-)
You should be good to go without most if not all of the "scary" worries of later 32V engines and auto trannys.
Best of luck and enjoy!
