Okay, I think I get it. I guess if you're carving though traffic in a hurry, the 996T would be a better choice than a 928. Happily (because I've been there), I have no need to slice through traffic. I need a long-distance tourer. And thinking about it, the 996 would be the worse choice for me, because it has so much less interior space.

I'll have mine at Frenzy. I'll swap you for the Fun Run if you want.

I'll say this - the 996 is essentially the Boxster from the B pillar forward, including the inside cabin geometry. I had a Boxster, and the foot well was very narrow, such that a drive of any length, say 3 hours to Hershey, was not comfortable from a left foot placement standpoint. There is no place to stretch out your left foot. I loved the Box for scooting around town, and hoping from redlight to redlight, and the balance is perfect. It is a fun little car, but not comfortable for a long drive. This is all to say that the 996 would suffer from the same issue. Therefore, I would not classify the 996 as a GT car under any circumstances.
On the other hand, I have a 997.1 - it has a lot more room in the foot well than the Boxster had (an similarly the 996). It is very comfortable for long drives (although still not in the same league as the 928 - I've driven 2 of them across the country, plus other cars over those distances, and nothing is like the 928 for a long haul). The 997 is certainly more of a GT car, but it really retains that hang it out the end sports car feel when driven in anger, something that you do not get with the 928. But the 928 rewards you in so many other ways - you can drive it near its limits without even knowing you are. It makes you a much better driver than you are, or at least it makes you think so.

Your feet must be a lot bigger than mind, Ed. I don't have a problem with the footwell space in either the manual or the Tip. I drove my daughter's 986 from Oklahoma to the Poconos and it wasn't bad - certainly better than my 951 was, but I'd have much preferred my Shark.

Shawn, I have followed this thread closely and with some interest. I looked at a couple of yellow examples on eBay also, but didn't pull the handle on either of them. Then, similar to you, I decided to buy one, but for my Grand daughter. However, she preferred a different color so I opted for a Pink one. It must be a very late model since it is electric. It also has something that I'll bet you wish you had on your daughter's and that is a Parent Remote Control. My little Libby is 3 years old and her Boxster is 12 volt.

Crap, I just bought a 2002 Boxster! It may be quite a project. Don't tell my neighbor's. I have fixed a few problems since I have bought it, temp sensor, spoiler, massive bulb issues. The big issue was smoke out the engine vents, this turned out to only be spark plug tube o rings..... The car drives like a go cart compared to the 928, but fun. Almost no footwell room. The saga continues with what it may need next.

Pics?

The Boxster forum on Rennlist isn't great. You want 986Forums.

Hey Shawn,

Here is the pic when I got it home,

And here when I just finished polishing the headlights.

Some issues worked out, some still in progress.
But I can drive it!

Looks good! I'm not a huge fan of black, especially in sports cars. If it was me, I'd return the wheels to the stock buff metal and find some decals for the sides to liven things up.

Make sure you put something over the radiator intakes. I did it with $5 worth of Home Depot rain gutter screens and a couple zip ties.
