I have been trolling and test driving Aston Martin DB7s for most of this year but I have been scared off because of maintenance costs. Compare those to earlier AMs. Tremendous value!

How about a V12 VW Phaeton as a daily driver? A $100k VW that shares components with a Bentley and you can get them for less than $20k.

It's all about knowing where to look for underappreciated values.

Dinsdale Piranha!s wifes DD is a VW V12 Phantom. His DD is a 83(?) 928 with a V12 Toyota motor and Z06 6apd manual. T

I'm 5' 11 1/2" and when I go to these investment banking and private equity cocktail mixers I am a midget. I think their hiring parameters is height. I never felt short until I started in that area. 6' 4" would fit right in.

My daily driver in Los Angeles (about half my time) is a 2004 silver Z06. In Denver, I have the 1997 C5 Corvette which the Z06 replaced in LA. When I feel comfortable that the 1985 928 in LA is good for a road trip then I will drive it back to Denver and it will be my driver. My wife has a 2013 Ford Edge. We have a 2014 Mercedes B-Class electric which I need to sell now that I have fulfilled the ownership requirement for the tax credit.

The Ford Edge is a solid winter car in Colorado. I like it. But I would like to get the VW Phaeton.

Almost impossible to import a used car to Thailand. If you manage it is more than 400% tax on a value customs decide for you.

Cheapest used 911 for sale (all years) is approx US$150000

MAGA!!!! Tariffs and quotas until the scumbags in Thailand stop oppressing their citizens who desire kick-butt 928s and other collectibles! Just kidding. Not making a political statement.

Nah, if you owned both, you would see how well they complement each other.
The 996 is the last of the "small" 911's. The 997 got larger and the 991 even larger still. The 928 is like driving a comfortable living room and comes with tons of charm.
The 996 Turbo is a weapon. Especially if you play with them.
I would be sad if I didn't have both.

From Excellence. So 100lbs and less than 2" in length dictates a small vs not so small 911? Both are HUGE compared to the 930....relatively speaking

996 TURBO
H: 50.98"
W: 72.05"
L: 174.6
3,395lbs

997 Turbo

L: 176.2"
3,495lbs

Just for fun 928S4
H: 50.51
W: 72.28
L: 178.07
3,505lbs

993 Turbo
H: 51.77
W: 70.67
L: 167.72
3,307lbs

964 Turbo

I always thought the 996 and 997 were the same size with the 993 being smaller and the 991 larger, which Hacker just confirmed, but I agree that they're different cars and owning both are complementary. My 997 is supercharged so similar in power output to your 996 Turbo but with the RWD and rear bias driving dynamics.

I've done this exercise before. It was quite revealing!

And the same numbers for the 986:
H: 50.8
W: 70.1
L: 171.0
2,822lbs

I don't see how the 996 and the 928 are complementary, especially when I have a 986 Boxster. They numbers say they're GT both cars. The driving experience may be somewhat different, but that doesn't make the 996 a competitor to the 986, it just makes it a different kind of GT car.

There are three kinds of trips in my life, and I have a car for each: Bombing around (986), long distance (928), and hauling trash (955). Even if the 996 would serve as the sunny day bombing around car (which, based on my experience and the measures shown, it would not), the cost and maintenance on a 996 is at least twice what they are for the 986. Plus, I'm well out of garage space.

And while the 996 seems like an excellent GT car (again, based on my experience and the measures shown), I'm completely smitten by the 928's iconic shape, especially the OBs.

Notice I put "small" in quotation marks. 100lbs, IMO, is pretty significant. Hell, that's even considered "lightweight" when a model has an example that's 100lbs less than the standard model.

Definitely not saying a 996 Turbo is in any way an alternative to a Boxster. My comment was merely tongue in cheek.

However, I do feel the 928 and 996T are complementary of each other. They are completely different personalities, despite overall dimensions being similar.
I'm super lucky to own both cars.

Hm. 6 foot eight here, 36 inseam, and fit in my 86.5 928S perfectly. Haven't tried it with a helmet yet, might give the Chesapeake AutoX a go, we'll see....

Also fit in:
911 GT3 RS (lots of headroom, spinable)
74 Porsche 914 (you wear it, but comfortable)
87 944S (classic, lots of headroom as well)

You've got the Cayenne for hauling bales of hay and such, so if you had a 986 or similar for carving up curvy roads, when would you use the 996 vs. the 928?

I have a bunch of cars, TBH and to me, they all have a specific purpose (well, that's at least how I justify it to my wife haha )
I have a Fiat 500 Abarth as a daily driver.
The Cayenne Turbo is my daughter hauler.
I have a Ram 2500 Cummins that's my bale hauler.
My wife has her E-class.
The black 928 5speed is still a project.
The white auto 928 is my cruiser.
996 Turbo is my freeway missile.
I honestly don't have a go-to "canyon carver" or a 'vert and don't have the 996 or the 928 setup for that.
I'd like to get a Boxster to add to the fleet but would probably need to spend some quality time with one to push me in that direction.
