JE's are more like 1000, and if you can get the block nik'ed for 900, sign me up.

Doesn't US Chrome charge about 1000 bucks for nikasiling a block? They hone it too and it's nice knowing that your block is being honed by a shop that does that all the time.

my block was bored, coated and sized for custom pistons for $1200.00 by millinium. just plating and fitting w/stock bores would be less... my custom je's cost 1200 w/rings & pins. pistons were about $800, no doubt cheaper forged stuff is around too.

still cheaper than rebuilding it from scratch if it blows. and at those power levels - how long do ya think it'll really last?? maybe I'm wrong/that's why I was asking... magic porsche castings?? I hope it works out, guess we'll see..

besides, someone had to ask...

Well its always a side by side comparison. Wet sleeves are now being used and tested. With those, you have 250,000 psi strength compared to the 30,000 the Alusil has. With stockish sized 104 or 105mm ID sleeves installed, and using JEs, where are we compared to shipping our blocks to wisconsin for a (probably now) 1400 dollar process?

But remember, to use forged pisons may be just a skirt coating away for alusil bores.

Either Millenium or US Chrome will do a good job. And I agree with Brendan, if you are going to that degree of effort and expense in your build, a set of Forged pistons is just a nick above what you have already spent and good insurance.

Having said that - the Mahle cast pistons are damn good and I have heard some say that a Mahle cast piston is as good as some other's cheap forged ones. Maybe - but my little metalurgy knowledge doubts that.... still, we have very few Mahle cast piston failures that cannot be attributed to some error that would have torn apart any other piston anyway.

I'd guess wet sleeves are a whole different ballgame pricewise vs just using stock bores and nikom. sleeves might be the best option for a super power motor assuming the block stays together though...

if a ferrostan coating could stick on a forged pistion w/all the expansion going on, that would surely be a cost effective option. but IMO, "testing coatings" belongs in the category with "crash test dummies" after my experiences w/it and watching what has happened so far w/other pcars, and bikes, etc... might be interesting to use nikom on a piston

I'd just hate to see tony's awesome twinscrew install get hosed up trying to save a few bucks... course, I'm sure the pics and story will be cool either way

Default Did Tony use these pistons?

Hi Tony,

I stumbled on this thread that the cats dug up and drug around the yard a few months back.

Did you end up using the modified pistons in your SC setup?

Machining of stock pistons have been something I have though of in the past but I was unaware that you have already done it with S4 pistons...

Just wondering if you went this direction in the end and if so your thoughts on it.

Thanks,

Loren Olson

I still have yet to build up the motor i have for them. Another member has used a set in his car that were machined at the same time as mine. I figure they CC to appx 8.7-9:1 Probably closer to 9 after i have the heads skimmed. I think there are pics posted back in this thread. I bought a Used S4 piston and disected it..cut it up etc etc to come up with the area in which i thought it would be OK to remove material.
