Broken spring in 4 speed auto trans (86.5 32v)
Found this spring broken and hanging on the passenger's side of the pan. Anyone know what it is and/or a part number to get a replacement?

Hello captainOCD, that spring helps return the TV lever at the valve body. It is common for it to break.
From PET, it is part #722 993 001 0, 'Spring'
Please go to post #50 on my thread here, you will need to scroll down several photos to see the spring and where it goes:

Also, check out this thread on the exact same thing you have going on:

Good Luck!

I just put one of those return springs into my 88 as well as the B2 vacuum pod and new nylon bore seal.
Greg Brown had all the updated parts I needed.
Roger will have these parts as well.
NOTE make sure you also drain the torque converter it holds about 5 qts,
the drain plug is found inside the grate .
NOTE you should have a helper slowly crank the engine by hand till you see the plug come into view.
NOTE their was a note in the WSM that the drain plug could be accessed with the engine at TDC but thats a hit or miss occurrence

Is this vacuum pod something I should be replacing?
I haven't drained the torque converter yet because I'm not ready to try and start the engine yet and don't want it to sit empty.
And while we're on the topic of transmissions, I couldn't get dex vi in bulk here, so I got valvoline full synthetic dex/merc. It says on the back that it meets dex ii, iii. and vi requirements. My Charger has a 722.6/w5a580/nag1 and it seems like that trans doesn't care what the fluid is (mb spec vs atf+4). The torqueflite in my Durango though is super picky about needing atf+4 only. So I'm not sure whether the 722.3 in the 928 is going to fall into the doesn't care or the picky category.

I would ask Greg brown about updating these parts,
BUT NOTE, since it has never run in your care,
I would be inclined to leave everything alone until I had put some miles on it,
to figure out the condition and what is and is not working.
IE it wouldnt make sense to replace parts if the trans is shot.
The updated Dex/Merc fluid will work in the trans

I just ordered a set of springs on amazon. Looks like there's one in there that'll fit. I realized I can't turn the engine to drain the converter right now anyway, still have the flywheel locked for the timing belt job.

Bless your heart CaptainOCD, but why would you even think of putting anything like an unknown spring into your transmission?
That's like practicing to bleed.
Order the absolute correct spring to install, please!!!

It seemed like it is just a pretty simple spring. I ordered on from Dave now. I was just hoping to get it put back together and refilled so I could try and start the motor once I get the rest of my tb tensioner parts.

I had an experience with Valvoline synthetic that has eliminated me wanting to use it.

Hope you are doing well, I see you are staying very busy!
Agree, I have had issues with synthetic A/T Fluid in older trannies that were used to non-Synthetic all of their lives. Could have been a fluke, but 2 out of 2 times was enough for me. Can't say that I recall for sure, but think it was Mobile 1 Synthetic A/T Fluid.
All the best,
Dave

If you guys think I'd be better off returning that stuff and getting something else I can. I thought I had read somewhere on here about the trans running cooler with the synthetic, which is why I bought it. I think they had conventional STP that was DEX3 compliant.

I'll get some of the STP conventional stuff then. I suppose if they won't take the unopened valvoline back I can give it to my brother as a graduation present for his el camino.

The local porsche dealer was able to get in the spring last week (the one from Dave will go in the blue car when it comes in) and I got it in the car last night. I only got about half as much fluid in the pan as what came out of it so far, so I'll have to top it off again once it's running and starts pumping the fluid.
