Default removing hub cover without special tool xxy

Ok everyone has to do this to check and re-lube the front wheel bearings. It is that nasty "hub cover" that presses into the front wheel hub. It looks like the PO beat it with a big stick. Got any better ideas?

Thanks

Large screw driver between hub edge and cover crimp. Tap it a couple of times to get the screw driver between the two edges and then slowly work it off. Re-install with a rubber mallet, gently.

I use a long 3/8" socket extension ( a ragged one for this purpose) and a mallet. Lay the extension so the socket end edge rests in the groove near the edge of the cap and the ratchet end just clears the rotor. Give it a small whack with the mallet, rotate rotor, whack, rotate, whack, rotate.... you get the idea. It will come right off.

A medium size cold chisel comes in very handy for this.......gently tap between hub and cap, rotate, repeat.....

- or - catch the 'hook' end of a pry bar on the cover lip & tap/rotate/tap/etc.
- or - grip the cover firmly with a pair of pump pliers & tap/rotate... the pliers
The big stick from the PO is for putting the cover back on

I got this galvanized fence post clamp at Home Depot. It's just the right size to clamp around the grease cap and provides a lip to pry off the cap.

Once the rotor is removed the cap is easier to approach with a block of wood and rubber mallet, gradually working around the hub.

The destructive method shown in the shop manual is unnecessary.

I use Vice Grip 11R.

Once you clamp it on, you can just rap on the knuckle with a hammer. Reposition and keep working your way around. Eventually, the cover will come off.
