Question cam housing ,what is this ?

I found a kind of aluminum patch on my right cam housing, is it normal or is it a scar left by the p.o. ? if yes what could have happened ? if it was made like that what was the reason ?

What does it look like under the cover? Do you know the PO, and can you call and ask him/her? Ed Meier

Never seen anything like that before, lots of nooks and crannies in there where a fastener could get stuck, but that seems an exteme solution to that.

Ed MD : i can't reach the p.o. and even if i could i would have no answer. and i did'nt lift the housing yet but i will to change the gasket while the engine is out. Someone here scared me saying that maybe they blew the engine and a valve could have went out there.

Ditto Karl. It looks to be overkill if it was for a crack repair. May want to check the part number to see if someone has modified a 944 cam carrier to cover the oil pressure relief valve hole.

A M most likely someone left a bolt ( one of the allens which hold the housing to the head ) inside the cam housing it then rattled around until one of the cam lobes managed to smash it against the housing making a hole ( an outie ) . Good possibility it also broke the camshaft at the same time . I can think of nothing else which could have that result including complete failure of the crank rods pistons ..... It was just a bolt that someone "lost" and forgot to fish it out ..
