Salvage Sale Pricing, what am I missing here?
1978 928 on Copart this morning. I had no interest in buying this one, just curious as to what it would go for. The days of buying a car like this for $400 at auction are obviously long gone. Cheap aftermarket seats? Check. Cheap bondo body kit? Check. Bad dent on upper fender? Check? Thrashed interior and body? Check. No original 78 parts left? Check. Totally wrong engine? Check. State reissued VIN plate? Check.
Yep, this checks all the boxes. $3600.00 and sold. With fees and tow, lets call it $4500.00. Prices are on the climb but this one is head scratch worthy. No offense to the proud new owner

It's read, shiny, and the body kit sold it.
Someone will give this a Macco paint-job & toss it on the lot for $15k.
I see the same thing all the time at the Copart & IAA auctions, people buying wrecked cars for not much lower than retail. I think more and more "retail" customers are infiltrating these auctions driving up prices since their goal isn't profit but a project.
If I were an expert body guy, I would have bought that all day long and twice on Sunday. That's easy body work for someone in that field..

Yeah that is a head-scratcher. I suspect that sale price is a product of two guys with auction fever. That for sure sits on CL or eBay unsold at that price. I still see parts cars pop up every so often on CL for less than $2K.

Oh.....I forgot to mention its a salvage certificate and it looks like its a private party sale. Private party sales usually involve trickery, I would not be surprised if that engine is just sitting on its mounts. Getting an L-Jet running into a 78 is not the easiest.

As far as the easy body work goes..........any 928 that looks that neglected is going to need a whole lot more beyond the body work. We all know this too well!

As far as modified early 928s go, I think we have seen much worse. I would not have bid, but I do think the body is not that big of a job, and the interior is OK. I would much rather deal with and L jet that has been sitting than a K jet that has been sitting, although smogging in CA would be an adventure.

Easy peasy.
Same goes for just about any engine swap in CA. You just need the factory smog equipment installed along with computers etc. and away you go.

Just curious,
What did the insurance company pay out to you to total it?

Race Car
All I can tell you they took a loss, car ran good what you don’t see is the dent in the roof and bumper is torn off. I had plans this winter to fix the fiberglass that is delaminated on this back 1/4. It would take another 5K to fix up the cosmetics at a min before the tree hit.
