Someone take pity on Seth. Drive by his place and let him drive your 928! Surely this Man has forgotten what it's like to drive these fine automobiles. He's been working on the Red Witch a long, long time and gratuitously sharing his fine work with us all.

Another vote here to leave the rings alone. +3

Two things:

Clean the rest of the carbon off the tops, it's easy to do.

I would suggest NOT replacing the rings as your bores look really nice.

[steps back away from the engine, thinks awhile...]

Alright guys, I'm listening. Rings are staying.
I didn't realize the bores looked that good.

On my way out the door last night heading to work, I rotated the engine stand so that cylinders 5-8 were vertical. I turned the crank so that 3 of the 4 pistons were relatively down in the bores. I poured several ounces of MMO into those bores. I will continue until all 8 pistons have been soaked. Then, for giggles, I will do the same all over again with ATF.

I will gently remove the remaining carbon from the piston crowns with a toothbrush and more carb cleaner.

Thanks!

Stan, I wasn't doubting you, just caught in my own web of 'should I do it while I'm in here or will I regret not doing it later...'

Imo000, I had thought it was no big deal to put new rings in an Alusil bore. That is what was driving me to cavalierly want to replace the rings.

928S MN, FWIW, I went for a blast in Bob Voskian's red GT at FRENZY. Big smile on my face!

New rings in alusil bores would seal a treat as long as they are gapped properly and the bore is still within tolerance...

That will work.

If it proves difficult, you can use a small piece of wood like a dowel, etc. with the carb cleaner to scrub it off without damaging the piston.

Will do. I will be gentle.

Thanks!

Stupid question: I know the skirts of the pistons are iron plated. Are the crowns also iron plated?

The entire piston is plated. But scratching the top of the piston wont harm anything

Just use Permatex Gasket Remover and be done with it.

168,000 miles.

Assume lots of these miles being freeway driving and say that the car averaged 40mph over those miles.

4,200 hours.....that's 252,000 minutes.

Ultra conservative, assume the car turned 2500 rpms....(It's a 5 speed, right?)

630,000,000 revolutions....315,000,000 complete combustion cycles.....and each piston travels over 1 foot for each combustion cycle. That means the pistons have traveled up and down the bores roughly 60,000 miles....and that's being ultra conservative!

If the car averaged 30mph over those miles, and averaged 3,000 rpms (more likely), it's turned over 1,008,000,000 times. Over 500,000,000 complete combustion cycles!!!! The pistons would have traveled 96,000 miles up and down the bores!

How many times around the world is that? Just about 4 times!

The exhaust guides (with valves that literally glow bright red and are sodium filled to transfer the heat to the guide and head) which have gone up and down 500 million times and still be fine, right?

Just curious.....how long do you people plan on wear items, in the engine, lasting?

You forgot the jackhole effect his engine has been subjected to!
