Default '90 A/C Belt Excesive Wear

I was inspecting underneath the '90 GT this morning and notice a lot of wear on the A/C belt after trip to Sharks to Ontario. It appears that it is not aligned with the crank pulley and tracking at an angle. What would cause this? What is the remedy?

Thanks everyone......

A missing crank gear thrust washer can move the AC pulley in to far, or something a miss with the AC compressor and/or bracket.

A local chap had a similar issue, thread below.

Is it only your AC belt?

How are the other belts?

Like Adam said, if the crank washer is missing or put backward, everything will be misaligned.

Did that once (backward)...

OK. The other alternator & P/S belts are tensioned and fine. The part of the pulley that the air pump belt rides was hacked up by the PO that didn't use a flywheel lock (I assume) and I have one on order. That belt was chewed up also. The thrust washer is figure #12 in the PET or #6 (x2)?

#6 x 2

I'm just about to put the AC compressor on the 89 motor. I could take some detailed measurements if that would help ruling out a miss alignment of the compressor.

That would help Adam. Looking again the P/S is a little tweaked also. I'm going to look for one of the #6 washers missing. Will report back when I find out.

Update: The 2 washers (#6) are in place with the lips of the outer edges away from the crank gear. A/C belt is not straight with my eyes looking down the length of the belt. The A/C pulley on the crankshaft needs to move closer to the block or the A/C compressor needs to move closer to the radiator. Can't see how I would do either. My next step I suppose is to check the A/C mount? The air pump is still a problem also. Something on the bracketing on that side of the engine must be miss aligned/broken/ bent??

OP? Is your airpump still installed? Or has it been removed?

Really tough to imagine one of those very thin belt thrust washers moving the pulleys far enough to make the A/C belt off visually, much less cause wear. 1mm off in the 18" or so between the two center lines is going to be almost undetectable.

Something else going on here....a picture or two is probably in order.

Update: New belts installed and probably 60 miles of driving and no fragments of belt material. Re-tensioned all belts. All seems to be good now. Will report any change or wear in the future.

Maybe the belt was just really old.

That's my current thoughts. Start fresh with all new Conti Belts and keep an eye on them.
