Default Windshield replacement

The best auto glass place in the area turned me down. They say the 928 is too difficult for them. Huh? What's the scoop?
Has anyone replaced their own windshield? Cuz I might just do it myself. I've done lots of auto glass over the years, so I'm not new to this.

By the way, the more I look and drive this car, the more I can't believe how awesome it is!

The 928 windshield is not hard to replace. You might have a tough time getting the top moulding off without bending it and that may be the problem the glass company has had in the past. When I replace mine in my race car I simply take a small piece of wire and feed it past the seal. Next you need to run it around the perimeter and push the glass out.

Bling. Bling. Winner! Winner! Flash!
Thanks John. See what NOT checking the archives did for me?
I'll take whatever goodies you send my way. How about one windshield? Haha.
By the way John, I just discovered thru the auto shop up here, that there are Porsche owners lurking about these hills. But I don't know of any who are aware of the Rennlist. I put the word out.

Ok, I might attempt doing this myself. Appreciate the advice.

Has anyone replaced their windshield themselves? I do not live anywhere near an installer, and need to know any tips or things to be aware of.
Thanks

I've searched the archives and it has not been discussed on this forum, that I can tell.

Not sure about your modle year, but I am in the process of replacing mine while doing a repaint. I removed the trim and used a thin wire to cut the adhesive holding the glass in. My mirror is wasted from the sun, so I am not going to try to remove it from the glass. Not sure how to go about that. My local "fast glass" franchise will sell me a windshield for my 81' for about $260.00. It appears that all that is left to do is glue the glass in with windshield adhesive and reinstall the trim pieces. I think that if you are careful you could replace yours yourself without to much trouble. Check Nichols website for some writeups on the subject. Good luck.

Greg

I am the guy who posted last week regarding the windshield. If you can find the glass good luck. Mine is finally installed. I called every glass repair shop in the DC-Balt area only to be told that Porsche no longer supplies the windshields to the aftermarket, they must be purchased from the dealer. Due to the cost I turned it in to my insurance company.

The insurance company ended up using Safelite Glass, who received the windshield form one of the local Porsche dealers. It took 5 days for them to receive the glass. Glass quote to me was $1170 and my insurance company verified the cost was the same to them.

Anyway its installed now, took Safelite about 90 minutes to complete. As a side note I guess I never noticed the PO had glued an aftermarket mirror to the old windshield, so I had to add $70 to order a new one (the glass came with the mount already installed)

If you can find the glass locally for less.....buy two!

Hi Gregg,

I once helped the glass repair guy out, since I had to wait anyway and didn’t have anything else to do.
The tricky part is to get the mouldings off in one piece. They are thin and bent pretty easily.

I did a post about that some time ago:
https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...threadid=36370
On the bottom of this post I posted a picture on which I did some sketching. While having the mouldings off you can easily repaint them.

Than you have to remove your old window. It is done by wriggling a small iron wire between the glass and the car frame. On each side off the wire a grip is fitted, so with a sawing motion you can cut through the old glue. (Best to do this with 2 persons). Do not forget to remove the leather pads on the A-pillar, or you will surely scratch them. The glue from the car frame doesn’t have to be removed entirely, it makes a good solid base for the new glue. Just cut it smooth with a sharp knife. Next is to primer the new window. Before you do that, make a few test tries on how to fit the window. You have to slide it in one side first, because the frame on the side holding the mouldings make it a bit narrower the glass is wide.

I don’t think gluing the window is different than gluing any other window.

Thank folks,
After looking at the manual, it appears to be a huguguge job. But you know how the manual turns everything into rocket science. I mean, it really looks like a piece of glass just glued on. Which it is. But it ain't that easy. Even the glass guys say it takes two to do this job right.

Gman, I'll check Nichols site. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of encouragement. It's that first try that's intimidating.

Huskydog, thanks to your previous post, I called Safelite and they had the stock Porsche windshield for my 89, at half the price of the dealers cost. Even the Porsche part wasn't the end of the world, at $850. I know, it's softer. I'll stay with stock.

Andre, I guess it's time for a manual for the 89. The 79 didn't have that nice picture. I can't open the link, but I'll do another search and look at your post. I missed it in my search. One thing I've discovered about the Porsche is that everything is engineered to be worked on, and if done correctly, can be reused. The cutout view is invaluable.

Hey, thanks again. Great stuff!

Hey, thanks for the heads up.
But, Sekurit brand? Sigla is what's on the car stock. And I'm not sure I'm comfortable buying from an individual. Who knows what little imperfection he's discovered, and pretends not to know about. I'll have to check part numbers to make certain it fits a GT. I don't see many reasons to be concerned, as I"m sure they all fit.
But one thing, the top of the screen has that shading. Stock windshields don't have that.
Windshields, light bulbs, and tires are things I would be very skeptical to buy on ebay.
But darn, the price is right.
