Porsche 968 had a timing belt or chain?

How much are they asking? The lack of history is not a major deal breaker(to me) so if it's in good shape inside and out and not crazy expensive it would be worth it, paint and leather add up super fast. The mechanicals are easier to deal with. Can you do your own work?

if the paint is original and nice and the interior in good shape i wouldnt hesitate to put out 10k.
mechanical fixes are the "easy part".
you could get the whole car up to date maintenance-wise in a weekend or so if you were dedicated.

Get the last 3 digits of the VIN and I can tell you how it compares from a production perspective.
Good luck.

Indeed, you can get a 968 in acceptable condition and without too much service history from $7K to over ...$ depending on what you expect.
For me, the most important thing was, that the interior is in good shape. Mechanical and some exterior optical fixes are the "easy part" for me.
