Default Two tone dash repair

As you know, there are many two tone dashes for the 944/968 with black on the top and another color on the lower section. If you have a cracked black upper section and are able to acquire a nice used replacement black dash has anyone been able to successfully transfer over the alternate-colored lower sections to the replacement dash? They look like they are glued?

Thanks

just an observation:

Even the single color black dashes seem to take on a 'two toned' look, especially after 25 or more years of being exposed to the elements.....

They even had this certain lightness/darkness contrast to the black plastics when the cars were new.

I can't help but think on any series 2 or on any 968 cars, the blending of the black on black won't be as bad of a look as the rather unsightly degradation some of the lighter dashes take on due to U/V.

that would be good to know - I have a really nice black non-airbag top dash from a parts car Id like to sell but the bottom is practically falling off - maybe someone tried what you are proposing before - never seen anything like it.

I have two concours condition 968s with black interiors and the upper and lower dash blacks match 100%.

Does it look like they are just held on by glue?

I just did my dash earlier this year because the top section was cracking.

The vinyl is glued to the foam and I would venture to guess it is also vacuum formed to the dash. From my experience there is no way to get it off in one piece. It is very brittle after all these years.

At least that is how it was in my 944. The dash is a steel frame with the foam glued to it. When you peel the vinyl off, the glue remains stuck to the foam and you then have the sand it off.

As others have speculated, I imagine the bottom is something like this:

Vacuum formed with pleather glued on it.

Do you think the lower would be easier to remove as it would be in much shape? I'm starting with a good black dash and want to transfer the lower section. The lower sections are smaller as well.

I don't think it would be any easier. While the vinyl on the bottom is not as cooked as what is on the top, it is still old and dried out. Feel around the edges that are covered by trim. You'll find it is quite brittle.
