Default exhaust questions

'87 944S, still with original exhaust system that is due for replacing.

  1. I want to keep the setup as close to stock as possible from a sound perspective. I have been looking at the Dansk OE replacement . Does anybody have an opinion on this muffler or has other suggestions?
  2. Any recommendation on a catalytic converter? Although I'm not obligated to do so in Texas, I would like to be a good member of society and have one so deleting or gutting is not an option.
Thanks in advance.

I have the Dansk exhaust and an after market cat. It's a little louder and raspier than stock.

Thanks Van. Louder to the point of making Honda Civic owners take notice or just tastefully loader? What cat did you use?

By the way, your youtube vids are great, I learned a lot from them.

Well, I haven't heard it from the outside... But I don't think the Civic owners are taking notice. I'd say it's maybe 15-20% louder inside the car?

I used this cat: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've got the barely used Magnaflow downpipe and CAT bolt on if you're interested.

Your kids and the environment will thank you if you continue to use a catalytic converter.

I have an 87 2.5 "S" cat on the shelf that I cut off at the welds in anticipation of re-using. It's oem Porsche. Appears to be in excellent condition. $100 US shipped to your door. Email of PM me if interested & I can ship this week. waltnoah@gmail.com

Dansk is perfect on the S. Very close to stock sound. Beautifully made.

So I went ahead and ordered the Dansk exhaust. Not cheap but it looks solidly made and oh so pretty. It was so shiny I had some reservations about putting it on the underside of the car but alas, the car needs a catback so on it went.

Old vs. New

shiny....

I would say this part is a 99% perfect fit, the only thing that did not fit was the muffler bracket which was about a 1/4 of an inch too short on both sides. A little manipulation with some pliers did the trick.
I also replaced all of the rubber mounts along the entire exhaust and installed a hanger bracket at the cat/exhaust coupling; somewhere long ago this hanger went missing and this caused the cat to bounce off the heat shield from time to time.

Hardest part of the job was removing the old exhaust ring from the cat pipe; In the 50/50 proposition that is to which pipe it should weld itself to, the old ring chose the pipe that stayed in the car and not the one headed to the dumpster. But then again, it's never really a 50/50 proposition, the car will always choose the path that makes my life harder.

Exhaust ring

As to the sound, it's low and rumbly, but rather quiet so I'm very pleased. Throaty yet distinguished.
